Why do People Cyberbully?
Cyberbullying is something that children are having to deal with now with all the new technology and social media. Kids are exposed to technology at a young age now because of all the technological advances. Social media has a huge impact on how people think and how peer pressure is used with children. Bullies are starting to become more likely online than in person because of the bullies thinking it is easier to get away with it online. When a bully starts to pick at people online, sometimes they do not have a reason they just do it or they like to argue for fun, but most of the time they have some type of reason. The internet gives the person doing the bullying false sense of security, meaning that they do not think they will get caught or have to face consequences for what they are saying. Also, people that are self-conscious that bully do not have to face their victim in person, they only have to say it to the computer screen and not to an actual person, meaning they do not have to see the reaction of their victim (Gordon). Also they do not have to feel any compunction about what they say because they do not see the effect on the person’s face when they say something awful to them. They also may have trouble empathizing with people that they hurt (“Why Do People Cyberbully?”) “About 10% of teens engage in anonymous self-harassment. Interestingly, a higher proportion of boys (13%) admitted to this than did girls (8%)” (“The Anonymity Factor”). The anonymous factor is playing a huge role in why people start to cyberbully. Emotional shame is completely different from having self-esteem issues. Emotional shame has to do with how the person views themselves and that they might not live up to their personal standards. Also, if the bully has emotional shame, they can easily pick out what can make someone the most self-conscious and pick at this certain aspect or flaw. People have said that a reason that children bully is that the bully has low self-esteem themselves but in actuality, psychologists have done studies that bullies actually have a higher self-esteem than normal people. People have the emotion of shame for many different reasons including simple things such as his or her appearance, performance, friendships, and things of such nature
