Since the beginning of civilization, man has always sought after wealth. The theory of wealth vs. happiness stands the test of time. The idea that the amount of wealth a man possesses correlates with his happiness is a common theory throughout many different countries. Although money cannot directly bring happiness, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs successfully supports the fact that there is a strong correlation between the amount of wealth that a human possesses and their level of happiness.
According to Dictionary.com, happiness is contentment, joy, good fortune, and the state of being happy.
Speaking on Wealth, Lady Philosophy says, “wealth cannot make a man free of want and self-sufficient, though this was the very promise we saw it offering” (83). Moreover, Philosophy points out that the gathering of wealth does not stop people from taking that wealth away (83). Indeed, by its very nature, wealth seems contradictory. If we collect wealth, we believe we will be self-sufficient and free of want, so we hoard it; But “being miserly always makes men hated” (65). In its acquisition, wealth takes away from others, as it is a limited thing, and only brings hatred and paranoia to those who gather it. “[I]t is only when money is transferred to others in the exercise of liberality and ceases to be possessed that it becomes valuable” (65). The acquisition of wealth, then, is folly and can never grant true happiness.
The questions that are asked when exploring the concept of happiness should begin with desire to know if it is a pleasure based in our basic and primitive emotions. Next, is happiness motivated by pure desire? Does a mental state of contentment produce happiness? Does happiness come from a simple, physical feeling? Maybe happiness is a combination of all of these.
Happiness in today’s modern language is defined as a pleasurable or satisfying experience (Merriam-Webster). This definition differs greatly when compared to the Greek word happiness was translated from, eudemonia. Eudemonia is best translated as “well-being” or “flourishing” (Reeve, 227). From this definition, happiness is not based solely off of an emotional state, but a condition of a person over a lifetime, and not just in a specific moment in time. A kind of active living that is in accordance with virtue (Aristotle, Book I, VII).

As a child growing up, parents would teach their kids that realizing certain milestones in life, such as, getting A’s in school, getting accepted into an Ivy League college, having a respected career, having a trusted income, living in a two story home, marrying the love of your life, having well-rounded kids, pretty much living the American dream with the perfect family, will make us happy. The honest truth is that even obtaining all of these things listed above has nothing to do with happiness. The Oxford English Dictionary defined the word happiness as “the quality or condition of being happy;” it sounds fairly easy to define, but happiness isn’t just “being happy”. If the word was that easily interpreted, than many people wouldn’t misuse it in different contexts or scenarios. Happiness is different from happy moments. Even though the word happiness is debatable, at the end of the day, it is what everyone is trying to attain.
According to Buddha, “Happiness does not depend on what you have or who you are. It solely relies on what you think.” To be happy, one must know what happiness is and then find aspects that make them feel that way. Happiness is not a brief sense of positive feelings, but a lasting sense of contentedness that can be achieved by keeping close relationships and engaging in habits that seem contradictory at first to happiness.
Happiness is an inner state of well-being and fulfilment, and therefore it has to come from inside. Every individual has his or her own emotions and way of thinking and as a result of this no one can really say what happiness is and what happiness is not. However, universally, happiness is a by-product of a healthy attitude and viewpoint. Happiness exists in everyone whether they choose to acknowledge and believe it or not. It is not rare nor is it something only the elite have: everyone has it but not everyone recognizes it. Contentment is finding a light at the end of every dark tunnel and in order to experience this we must ignore the pessimism surrounding us and remind ourselves that happiness is not a materialistic object but a choice and frame of mind.
What does it mean to be happy? Happiness is a sensation that people want to have, and a lot of it. Above all else in the world, it’s what we seek and long for. Though this feeling can be found in many different places and at many different times, it isn’t easy to acquire. For some people, happiness might be found in exercise and sustaining good health. On the other hand, others can discover it when they go on vacation and relax. The idea here is that we each have our own things that make us happy.
To keep the body at optimum level, you need to take the necessary steps to maintain your health as well as prevent the onset of diseases. It is therefore important to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle—by eating nutritious food, doing daily exercise and using natural health products.
Happiness is a feeling that cannot be broken if strong enough, no matter how much sadness or hate is around you. Happiness can come from the smallest thing, for instance, music makes me happy and can easily change my mood, or when I am doing something I love my mood is easily changed. For others it could be whenever you do something well, or right and get recognition for it. It is the easiest feeling to be spread and given out but often neglected and forgotten about which is something we should all be more aware
Acquiring things like houses and cars only has a transient effect on happiness. People’s desires for material possessions crank up at the same, or greater rate, than their salaries. Again, this means that despite considerably more luxurious possessions, people end up no happier. There’s even evidence that materialism makes us less happy.
