It all started in sixth grade when some of my friends told me to try volleyball with them. I was a little hesitant to want to join because I didn’t consider myself to be good at that kind of sport. I was the type of girl who always participated in soccer, basketball, and tennis up to this point. Our school didn’t have tryouts for sports because it was such a small school, which was great because I wasn’t very good at volleyball at first. Even though I realized I wasn’t that good at it, I wasn’t going to quit right away. I worked hard and saw myself getting better and better. By the time I entered high school I was one of the top players my team could count on. After the first year of playing high school volleyball, I realized it was my true passion over all the other sports. Volleyball is one of those sports that a lot of people think they know a lot about but in reality, they know very little. I used to be one of those people. One of the biggest misconceptions that a lot of people think, even myself before I played, is that the sport is not that complicated. This idea tends to make me upset now when I hear it because I worked so hard to be the best that I could be. When I started, I learned very quickly that it is a very complicated sport. You have to learn to keep calm when a ball is coming over the net toward your face at a speed that could reach around 100 miles per hour. On top of staying calm, you also have to make sure you slow down the speed of the ball and set it up to make a play out of it. It was in that humbling and sometimes really painful experience that I learned not to judge something if I have not tried it
