The purpose of this short interview is to ask an elder person, at least the age of 40 years old, about their view of sex during their time and their perspective of how the society has changed. This experiment will illustrate societal and sociological changes that have occurred. For this project, I interviewed Mrs. Ebony Jackson, a 41 years old Africa-American women. Mrs. Jackson was born in 1975 and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her family that she grew up in consist of her two sisters, mother, grandmother, and grandfather. I asked Mrs. Jackson if her family ever talk to her about sex or sexuality and the respond I got was a 'no. She believes that community views of sexuality nowadays are more acceptable unlike when was a teenager. She also mentions that social media used to be more conservative than now. Mrs. Jackson explains how fashions were different and falling in love used to be more romantic than just casual sex. “Today, celebrities are showing too much skin, they are wearing less and less cloth each year,” stated Mrs. Jackson. She tells me that she grew up in a strict ‘black’ home and how she would never dress up the way teenagers do now. There are a lot of factors that shape her view of sex. She describes how she was raised did not affect her views of sex much as she grew up, but her peer mainly influences her perspectives of sexuality. People in her age started to have sexual activity at a young age. Even though her family does not talk about sex, but a lot of teenage girls that she grew up with, including herself, have had premarital sex. The lack of advice or education about sexuality results in teenage pregnancy. Sex before marriage seems to be something that existed for a while, but not exposed. She told me that even though gay/lesbian are not widely acceptable and exposed back then, but they are now. Society used to reject heterosexual and some people, including Mrs. Jackson, did not know about them until later. In contrast, gay/lesbian today play important roles in the (black) church. Mrs. Jackson describes how homosexual currently takes leadership positions in churches. I found it interesting that people are more open to homosexuality in black churches than in white churches. Lastly, I asked her to differentiate sex and gender. Mrs. Jackson believes that sex is only the biological appearance (genitals) of a person but gender is the identity that the individual would consider themselves to be.
