Congestion, lack of efficient public transportation, air pollution and accidents are common transportation related burden of many cities and metropolis around the world. Increasing economic development and mobility creates higher demand for transportation; and private car dominated developments results in congestion, high level of environmental pollution and accidents which drastically affects social and economic performance and sustainable development. According to the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (Cervero, R., 2013), Bus Rapid Transit system is defined as a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost effective services at metro-level capacities. Filipe, L. N., & Macário, R., 2014) also defined BRT as a permanently integrated system of facilities, services, and amenities that collectively improve the speed, reliability, and identity of bus transit comparable to a light rail transit but a rubber-tired with greater flexibility and lower costs.
BRT systems have higher geographic coverage and similar capacity with LRT but with lower level of CO2 emission and better serves low and medium density areas, and more readily adapt to changing land-use and population patterns than rail systems (Vincent, W., & Jerram, L. C., 2006). The same authors further found that BRT offers greenhouse gas reduction because of mainly BRT systems vehicles generally offer lower CO2 emissions per passenger kilometers, and their lower capital costs for BRT infrastructure would enable cities to built more BRT than LRT for a given budget. The bus system consists of linking media like wires and connectors, and a bus protocol. Buses can be categorized as serial or parallel and synchronous or asynchronous. The bus lets the different components communicate with each other by allowing information to flow between units and devices.
When you encounter a city such as Chicago, it is practically impossible to avoid CTA and Metra trains. From short store errands to long journeys home, the CTA is there as your personal downtown car. If you do not have enough money to put into owning a car or simply do not want to put up with trying to find parking in the congested city, the CTA is there for you. Where more people to use the CTA, the amount of gas polluting the earth would significantly decrease the pollution levels in Chicago. Many people use the airlines to travel to one place to another, and by building the railway it will decrease the number of people who ride the planes and it will decrease the amount of people traveling in car, too. The railway is not only going to decrease the amount of people traveling in planes, cars, or bus but it will also decrease the amount of time people take to travel in this kind of transportations. A reporter says, “Texas central is planning to build a bullet train route that cut between Dallas and Houston, Trimming about 2 hours off the average driving time, and saving over an hour compared to air travel” (“Proposed”). The railways will cut time for passengers to get to their destination but it will have a bad result later on. Some people agree on building this train because it will be faster to get to one place to another, but they are wrong because it will take costumers away from other transportations, and it will have an impact in the increase of how much each ticket cost. It will destroy land from does that live there. Researchers have found that railways benefit economies by bringing competition to transportation because people will be able to choose from all the varieties. The Researchers are wrong because airline will not have the same amount of people as they do before the high-speed train is build. Pollution is a major problem for all of us. People need to recognize this situation so we can start making a difference to this problem. In order to start making a difference, the federal government should increase gasoline tax by one dollar a gallon. Fifty percent of this dollar will go towards public transportation, since passenger cars and trucks are a major contribution towards air pollution, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, E.P.A (10/4, http://www.epa.gov/autoemissions/emsns.html). Due to the expected increase after this is put forth, the remaining fifty percent of the dollar will go towards safety on these transits. When public transportation increases, air pollution will decrease, which will lessen the harmful health risks towards the environment.
Public transportation is an essential part of a city. A good public transit can encourage a city’s economic activities and can provide its citizen a convenient life.
