Most people go through life and always hear about the word respect, but do any of us really and truly know exactly what it means? To me, respect means a lot of thing. Respect means that you listen to someone’s ideas, as well as know when to help someone, or ask them if they need help. To respect someone, is not to assume that they are invincible, but to be their friend if they need it, to be able to put petty disagreements in the past. It also means that we are to recognize each person’s right to their personal space, beliefs, opinions, etc. Respect to me is showing someone that you value his or her feelings and thoughts. It means valuing each other’s points of views and being open to being wrong. You may not agree with their opinions, but you should understand their right to express those opinions, and that you also enjoy the right to disagree. You can respect someone as a person and respect their opinion, without having to agree with them or view things the same way. Respect means accepting people as they are. Since the first step to building strong relationships is respect, the absence of respect or the breakdown of respect are also key factors in the breakdown of relationships and in the occurrence of conflict. Relationships that are built without the presence of respect are seldom long term or sustainable. Thus, the presence of respect can help transform conflicts, by providing opportunities that did not exist before. At the same time, the absence of respect can lead to conflict.
