What Do Cooperatives Mean to my Community?
Cooperatives all over the world are working locally and nationally to help better communities. There are different ways they all choose to accomplish this task, however they all follow seven key cooperative principles including: Open & Voluntary Membership, Democratic Member Control, Members’ Economic Participation, Autonomy & Independence,and Concern for Community. One that stands out at my local cooperative specifically is their concern for the community.

They aren't required to hand out these educational opportunities, however they feel it is their duty to serve the community in a way that will be beneficial to the community of the future. They are also concerned with the local economy. For instance, since 1997 they have raised five million dollars from their members through a drive called Operation Round Up. They have been collecting spare pennies for twenty years, hoping to help the families of the community. This five million dollars has since been granted to local families and individuals in my community. My family helps serve meals each month at an emergency shelter for the homeless, First Step Back Home. Operation Round Up has been supporting this non profit since 2006 and has received more than $85,00 in grants through Operation Round Up. In 2015 my sister won 1st in the Best Young Photographer category. She was awarded $100 & had her photo featured in November on the calendar. Cuivre RIver provides these calendars, free of charge, to their members. The “Green Tree Grants” partner with local schools to assist in planting of trees. The Youth Programs are designed to educate students on energy consumption, and electric safety. They even have a page on their website directed just for kids, the Cuivre Kids Club Page. The Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. is also part of their Youth Programs. This program awards 6 juniors an all-expense paid trip to D.C. to learn more about democratic leadership. The Youth Tour Program also awards 6 runners-up a $500 scholarship to the college of their choice and awards a $50 grant to teachers who submit 10 or more compositions.
