Dyslexia is inferior to determination, creativity, and passion. An exemplary display of this is Walt Disney. Walt Disney was born December 5, 1901, throughout his life Walt suffered from the disability, dyslexia (IMDb). Walt Disney used creativity, determination, innovation, and passion to overcome his disability and create one of the Worlds biggest and most well known attractions and characters. Walt Disney created “The Walt Disney Company” this extraordinary company includes a collection of theme parks such as Disney World and Disney Land and characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and so many more! Walt Disney is not only a role model to kids and adults, he is also a leader for the world. Therefore, when I was asked to think of a person who is most deserving to be honored with their own postage stamp, Walt Disney was the first person I though of. Julie Williams, an elementary school teacher, said to her class and posted online “Since stamps are first class, your designs should be designed to look first class (Education).” With that being said I believe Mr. Walter Elias Disney should be granted the honor and respect to be used as a postage stamp design for his various feats of determination, creativity and, passion.
Dyslexia is defined as any of various reading disorders associated with impairment of the ability to interpret relationships to the outer world or to comprehend audible or visual information (Dictionary). Walt Disney is the greatest entrepreneur of all time in most minds of little people and big people everywhere. The reason for this is he started his ‘business’, selling sketches, at the age of around seven years old. He was a vibrant child, as well considering he painted the side of his barn with tar. To him schoolwork was boring which he actually said once he was a lot older. Walt Disney was a family man, considering he had so many children; his children even had lots of children. Walt Disney was a man with a lot of talent, character, and imagination, who deeply loved fairy tales.
Disney Productions is one of the leading entertainment businesses, bringing tremendous profits not to mention the joy it brings many people. It has not always been this easy for Disney however. Dyslexia is a very common learning disorder that affects more than three million cases reported every year. It can also be referred to as a language based learning disability. Dyslexia is a disability that impairs one’s ability (usually identified in children) to read and interpret different letters/words. It cannot be cured and is generally a lifelong condition but can be treated with therapists/specialists. This disorder does not translate to poor individual intelligence, just simply an individual that struggles in an area of learning. It refers to difficulty with words read, word split, word pronounced, words written and associated with meaning of words. Dyslexia is a language based learning disorder that is grounded in the neurobiology of the brain. The disorder interferes with the processing and comprehension of both spoken and written language. Often there are other associated symptoms such as poor spelling, writing, handwriting and occasionally arithmetic (1). People do not read or write backwards as is depicted by the media. Nor is it a disorder of laziness or lack of intelligence.
Whether we graduate from highschool or college we all hope to find a challenging career that will propel us forward in today's society. For those suffering from dyslexia this only adds to the frustration and fears associated with seeking employment. Many adults with dyslexia or other forms of learning disabilities never disclose their disability in interviews or once employed for fear of being discriminated against. Several investigators have noted, however, that many persons with learning disabilities adjust well to the demands and complexities of adulthood. (Greenbaum et al. 1996). The basic cause of dyslexia is still not known, however, much research is being done to determine the problems underlying dyslexia. In many cases, dyslexia is highly inherited. Studies have shown a number of genes that may set the stage for its development. Characteristics of dyslexia are now more apparent to educators than ever before. Early educational interventions are helping individuals to manage their dyslexia. There have been some studies that attend to accommodating persons with learning disabilities in post-secondary and occupational settings. Only a few articles will be reviewed having been found worthy of this subject. However, before reviewing the articles, in order to gain a greater understanding of the types of learning disabilities people face lets define one of the most significant learning problems: dyslexia.
