Volunteer Experience Reflections Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club of Shippensburg provided me with insight into the importance of afterschool programs in the development of children's lives. Completing different tasks before the kids arrived, conversing and playing games with kids, and helping staff clean up afterward were some of the main services I Provided. Working with younger teens from all different races helped me understand the diversity of people throughout society and that several forms of diversity can impact people and their families. The use of the person-in-environment perspective describes how a person's surroundings can affect them in a positive or negative way (Cox, Tice, and Long, 2016). For example, a single mother may not have a babysitter to watch her children after school while she is at work. She then gets them into an afterschool program that provides her children with a safe and supportive environment to reside in until she returns home. As a result of attending an after-school program, a child can be protected from things like crime and danger, positively interact with other children in a diverse setting, and develop socially and intellectually outside of school. While volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club, I assisted in the social development of children who attended the program. Being a college student among middle and high schoolers I was able to answer any questions that they asked me based off of things that I have already experienced. Also, being able to give a child someone to listen to was a big benefit because the more a child can express him or herself, the more that child can become self-aware and gain insight about who he or she is becoming as an
