The question of whether or not yv debates retard the political process is or whether they speed it up and allow more access to the common people is an important one. The answer isn’t cut and clear and there isn’t just one side that’s right. So I ask the question, why cant it do both? Its easy to see how it can dumb it down to the lowest common denominator, but also how it gives a glimpse into politics for everyone. Some say it lessens the debate and others that it glorifies it and enhances it, well it does both. One of the best examples is shown in source e of how public tv debate can enhance the political system. The Vietnam war was a bloody, tragic, and unnecessary war in which tens of thousands of people died. The television swayed public opinion even further to end the war. In source c kennedy won because of his charisma and looks when nixson in fact had very good policies. What would have happened if nixson had won because people didn’t see his face and see how insecure he was in his resolve. What if kennedy had a a horrible foreign policy, that could very well have literally ended the world and all because of the inherent bias in seeing.Then again radio has a bias, because there is also a bias in hearing someone speak as well as hearing them.
