Veganism is a lifestyle accepted by many cultures and individuals leading to many social growth for the community. Swales definition of a discourse community becomes an accurate definition for the community. According to Swales a discourse community must have a common goal; in this case Vegans’ goals are to bring awareness to the food industry and not use or consume animal based products. They also share multiple genres of communications, a lexis and encouragement for newcomers (Swales). In this essay I will discuss the views of vegans from within and outside the community. Sometimes vegans will feel the need to stay quiet in certain settings in fear that they may ruin the atmosphere (Twine). Rather than being seen as outrageous, outspoken people some people of the vegan community still feel uncomfortable in a prominent omnivore culture. Some vegans also fear that they will be “outed” drawing more attention to them and their choices. Vegans also have the risk of having unhappiness projected on them meaning they are seen as serious and humorless (Twine). Seventeen year old, Euan Reece, says that not all of his friends are not supportive of his vegan lifestyle. He says “I find that men are looked down on in mainstream circles for being vegan as it isn’t seen as masculine” (Marsh). Veganism is still seen as taboo; even though through time it has become more known and accepted. Many vegans deal with judgement from outsiders which they must deal with. Euan says that social media is to be thanked for the accepting growth. “I feel that social media has played a major part in this, but there’s also the fact that younger people aren’t bound as much by traditional values, so they are more likely to change to a more leftfield thing such as veganism” (Marsh). Support and awareness is very important to him which can overlook the backlash he gets for being a male vegan.
