Economic growth is a necessary but not sufficient condition of
economic development.
There is no single definition that encompasses all the aspects of
economic development. The most comprehensive definition perhaps of
economic development is the one given by Todaro:
‘Development is not purely an economic phenomenon but rather a multi –
dimensional process involving reorganization and re orientation of the
entire economic and social system.
Development is a process of improving the quality of all human lives
with three equally important aspects. These are:
1. Raising peoples’ living levels, i.e. incomes and consumption,
levels of food, medical services, education through relevant
growth processes.
2. Creating conditions conducive to the growth of peoples’ self
esteem through the establishment of social, political and economic
systems and institutions which promote human dignity and respect.
3. Increasing peoples’ freedom to choose by enlarging the range of
their choice variables.’
Economic growth may be defined as an increase in a country's ability
to produce goods and services. Economic growth merely refers to an
increase in the real Gross Domestic Product, or GDP per capita over a
period of time.
It is natural to be misled by the idea that economic growth is the key
to economic development and perhaps a condition of development itself,
but development is more than simply increasing economic output i.e.
GDP per capita. It is a wider concept than economic growth. A
country's economy may experience real growth of GDP with no economic
development taking place. Nevertheless, wider more meaningful
indicators of development are often correlated with GDP per capita,
such as The ...

Thus it is evident that economic development does not always lead to
an improvement in living standards, due to its limited scope and
inability to impact the non materialistic aspects of human life.

Minerva is able to show her courage at a dinner party thrown by Trujillo, the dictator at the time. At the party she went to reluctantly, Trujillo asks Minerva to dance. Knowing of Trujillo’s offensive past with females, she is hesitant to accept, but says
The rule of Rafael Trujillo directly affected Patricia Mirabal. Patricia grew up as the oldest of four girls, and she was naturally the nicest, simplest of the four girls. She married early and had kids before she turned 20. But as she grew older, her faith was restored. One day she went on a church retreat into the mountains, the same day the first invasion from Trujillo fell. The author described how it seemed as if the Earth was coming down upon the very roof of that retreat house. Explosion after explosion ripped the air. The house shook to its very foundation (Alvarez 161). During that attack, Patricia made eye contact with a young boy who couldn’t be older than her own son in the
for a wild ride through their lives from their point of view. "In the Time of the Butterflies" is about
“Rufino de la Cruz, he too, lost his life when Trujillo, as the dictator thugs were known, stopped the girls jeep on a lonely mountain road as they were returning their jailed husband. No one else had wanted to drive them, as rumors were flying that they would be killed. But Rufino volunteered”(pg 329). This notes from the author Julia Alvarez shows that the rumors indeed were true, the Mirabal sisters were gonna get killed that night and Trujillo was behind everything. Chapter twelve, “I am glad is dark, so she cannot see my face when she says this, up north in those beautiful mountains where both your mother and father were murdered”(pg 319). This evidence is foreshadowing to the present and shows from the point of view of Dede that she believe her sister were indeed murder. “The girls had a feeling that they were going to be ambushed on their way to Puerto Plata because there was barely any cars on the road”(pg 320). This evidence shows that the people in the area of Puerto Plata knew that the Mirabal sisters were going to get murder this explain why there no one the road and why nobody wanted to volunteer to drive the Mirabal sisters to jailed to visit their
Out of all the Mirabal sisters, being courageous was Minerva’s specialty to show how she feels without being verbal with her emotions, and to get her point across. Right from the beginning of the book Minerva chose to create actions that were not only courageous, but reckless. After Minerva found out about her other sisters she crashed her father’s Jeep into his Ford at his other lover’s house. As always, she wanted to make a scene, “My voice was as commanding as his. ‘You’ve lost my respect,’” (Alvarez 89). Her father was extremely disappointed with her, but she wanted him to know that what he was doing was extremely wrong. Crashing her father’s cars was definitely brave, and especially since she did it in front of her other family without any second thoughts. Towards the middle of the book, Minerva informed Mate about some things she did not know, “Manolo and Minerva have explained everything. A national underground is forming,” and this is when Minerva explained more about how they created a national underground to try to get everybody freedom no matter what happened (Alvarez 142). This national underground was a h...
“But Minerva, your own child—" I began and then I saw it did hurt her to make this sacrifice she was convinced she needed to make” (155). Minerva asks her sister to take her son, Manolito, because she is going to be moving a lot for her revolutionary activities. Her sister Patria at first doesn't understand how she could give up her child; but she realizes that it isn't that Minerva doesn't care. She's making an immense sacrifice for what she believes in. Minerva has consistently sacrifice herself in her combat of injustice, and expects the same of those around her. When Minerva got out of prison, she talks about sacrificing her peace of mind, “I hid my anxieties and gave everyone a bright smile. If they had only known how frail was their iron-will heroine.” (259) In the end Minerva finally sacrifices her life along with most of her other sisters.
Over the course of the novel, the Mirabal sisters have shown a strong desire to be in the revolution and free their country from the cruel hands of Trujillo and his regime whilst putting their families in danger. Minerva is the first to give into the revolution as she leaves her children with her sisters and mother while she goes on to try and free the country. “I, who treasured my children more than my own life, couldn’t believe my sister would leave her son for anything…..”(155).Though abandoning her child must be a hard thing to do, Minerva does this, which strongly portrays her dedication to the revolution is stronger than her dedications to her children. They allow their homes to be ‘invaded’ by the revolutionaries; allow their hom...
She took in all of her sisters' children and watched after them due to what happened to their mothers. Minerva's eldest daughter became a congresswoman and has served since 1998. In 2010, she was reelected for an additional four years. The Mirabal Sisters' legacy has definitely gained recognition and honor and will continue to forever live on. As of for President Trujillo, he was a brutal dictator that had absolute power. A year later, he was assassinated by a group of rebels that were determined to end his reign.
It was difficult to find out who was the main narrator of In the Time of the Butterflies was, the author kept switching between different viewpoints in order to effectively tell the story of the Mirabel sisters. The Mirabel sisters spoke in firsthand accounts of what happened to them. It seemed
When the Mirabal sisters were growing up, their father had a whole separate family with children, and he kept it secret from his family. When asked why he had this affair, he replies with “cosa de los hombres”, or “things a man does” (92). This quote shows how infidelity was accepted during that time, and how the women couldn’t do anything about it. It was just naturally accepted. Men cheated, and that was socially okay. Another instances was how Minerva’s husband, Manolo, was already engaged to another woman when he met Minerva. When Minerva finally tells Mate about the man she’s been seeing and how the man is already engaged, Mate calls him a “Two-timer” (123). Immediately afterwards, Minerva defends his behavior, and Mate changes her mind about him. She thinks “I guess she’s right” (123), as if to suddenly realize that infidelity is okay, as long as her sister is benefitting from it. Cheating was so common with men around this time, it was socially acceptable, so when Mate hears about Minerva’s new boyfriend being engaged, it doesn’t take much for her to accept it. Even Minerave doesn’t care whatsoever that her new boyfriend is engaged. She isn’t worried about him cheating on her in the future, because the behavior is so
Minerva was the most heroic of her sisters. She introduced her family to the rebellion,
In 1938, Minerva’s father permitted her to go away to boarding school along with her two older sisters, Patria and Dedé. Alvarez’s writing on behalf of Minerva speaks volumes as to the point of view Minerva had growing up. “And that’s how I got free. I don’t mean just going to sleepaway school on a train with a trunkful of new things. I mean in my head after I got to Inmaculada and met Sinita and saw what happened to Lina and realized that I’d left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of our whole country,” (Alvarez 13). Minerva’s father, said that out of all his daughters, Minerva should have been born a boy. The other Mirabal sisters said that she was their father’s favorite daughter because Minerva acted the most like a son to him. She almost became the son he had always wanted, but never had. Due to her father’s influence, as Minerva grew up, she aspired to being a lawyer. Something which was unheard of for a woman in the ‘40s.
Minerva Mirabal was one of the most dedicated and truly effective of the Mirabal sisters. Her
Development is one of the most important factors of human life and one of the abilities which distinguish humans from animals. Over time, humans have realized their power to gain whatever they want from the environment. However, it has not taken too long for people to understand that this trend can end up with a disaster. Over consumption of limited natural resources can cause environmental degradation in an environment that humans are depends on it for living. This essay will look into the concept of economic growth and the effects of economic growth on the environment. Then, by analyzing the current situation, this essay will attempt to answer the question "how and how much can humans reduce environmental degradation?”
In order for any country to survive in comparison to another developed country they must be able to grow and sustain a healthy and flourishing economy. This paper is designed to give a detailed insight of economic growth and the sectors that influence economic growth. Economic growth in a country is essential to the reduction of poverty, without such reduction; poverty would continue to increase therefore economic growth is inevitable. Through economic growth, it is also an aid in the reduction of the unemployment rate and it also helps to reduce the budget deficit of the government.
