There are many teenagers today that believe vaping is safe, so thirteen percent of teenagers high school and under have tried vaping. These numbers have continued to grow and even doubled since last year. Companies have marketed them as the safe alternative but not much is known about the affects it could have on the body. Before knowing the effects of vaping, knowing how they work is also an important step in understanding what vaping is. Vapes have three major components, a power source, a cartridge that contains juice, and an atomizer. They work by having the atomizer heating the juice to its boiling point allowing the user to inhale the vapor. People who are against the idea of vaping will say that e-juice companies are putting in harmful chemicals that can harm the body and people who vape regularly will say that there are no harmful ingredients or chemicals in e-juice at all. If the companies are telling the truth then vape juice contains about 80-90% Vegetable glycerine. This is an organic material from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It is produced industrially because it tends to be a big ingredient in soaps. It can be made from animal fats or hence the name it can be made from vegetable oil. If you are vegetarian that is important to know when vaping because they would want vegetable glycerine only from vegetable oils. Vegetable glycerin is also used as a sweetener and in cosmetic products, so this product can be ingested harmlessly. It is used in the food industry for two major reasons: it has a sweet taste but it is fewer calories than sugar and it is hydroscopic. It can keep them moist and sweeten them at the same time and is ingested slower than sugar so it does not have a dramatic effect on blood sugar levels. Vegetable glycerin does not cause any tooth decay which is good for vapers. Vegetable glycerin can be made from vegetable oil and coconut oil by heating it up at high temperatures and pressure mixed with water. Why is vaping bad for teens? Teenagers would disagree with this saying “I don't think vaping is harmful at all, it is so much safer than smoking.” (Swenson) but studies show that vaping is increasing in popularity and if vaping is harmful to teens these numbers are troublesome, for example a survey in 2014 found that 9% of eighth graders vaped thirty days before taking the survey, and 16% of tenth graders vaped within thirty days of taking the survey. This has brought down teen smoking though because only 7.2% of tenth graders smoked in 2014 versus 12.1% in 2013. The number of total high school students that vape in total tripled from 4.5 to 13.4 percent. There are 2.4 million US students vaping and the data shows it will continue to climb.
