This paper will focus on looking at if e-cigarettes and other therapies are a valid way to help stop smoking. Doctors and patients alike need a definitive answer for this. This is a topic which is relevant at the moment as e-cigarettes become more prevalent in the United Kingdom (UK). As “current use [of e-cigarettes has] more than doubled from 2.7% of smokers in 2010 to 6.7% in 2012.”3 This paper will cover nicotine as a neurotoxin and how it affects the brain and body, what mechanisms nicotine uses and adverse signs and symptoms of nicotine use and overdose. This paper will also cover nicotine replacement therapies (NRT’s) such as gum, patches and oral spray but will focus mainly on e-cigarettes. It should be noted that as e-cigarettes have not been tested thoroughly, therefore they can’t be marketed as a nicotine replacement therapy by UK law at time of writing.
E-cigs are less harmful than regular cigarettes. They mimic the sensations of traditional cigarettes but do not burn or create tobacco smoke or ashes. Nor do they contain tar, the main cause of cancer in smokers”. e cigs bring lots of health advantages to smokers they are less harmful for smokers. For example, E-cigs can help regular smokers cut down on smoking cigarettes. Regular smokers can smoke spend less on cigarettes and incest in having an E-cig. Some might say they are cheaper than spending more than 20 dollars or more on three boxes of cigarettes. They think that is is beneficial for smoker who are having hard time trying to quit smoking and this could be an alternative for them instead having to quit. E-cigs have a tremendous untapped potential to positively change the lives of adult smokers of traditional cigarettes. They are more accessible to kids under 18 and they can be very dangerous if you don’t know how
Cigarettes have become a national icon, as big as the likes of cooperating giants such as Coca-Cola, as people are familiar with the idea of smoking from such a young age, becoming so addicted and subservient to seeing the act as normalcy in modern day America. Therefore certain solutions are needed to, at the very least, help make this icon less harmful to this country’s health. Both online articles, “Are Herbal and ‘Natural’ Cigarettes Safer?” by Ennis Thompson Jr.’s and “Marlboro Introduces Vitamin-Infused Cigarettes” by The Daily Currant argue that the so called “healthy” or “natural” cigarettes actually have a few health benefits and are only just a way to slow down the dangers of smoking. The Daily Currant makes a valid argument through
A growing trend in the United States is the use of an electronic cigarette as an alternative to regular cigarettes. An electronic cigarette burns a liquid solution containing a controlled percentage of nicotine with no carcinogens, and this provides the user with smoke that is actually vapor. According to Allen Mask M.D. (2014), “Sales of electronic cigarettes have boomed from $500 million in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2013” (Mask, 2014). The growth of sales in electronic cigarettes over the years is because it is being marketed as a healthier alternative, and more stores are opening to help assist others on selling as well as fixing their devices. The reason why electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative than regular cigarettes is that cigarettes are the leading causes of preventable death in America, because electronic cigarettes produce vapor not smoke, and it has helped people quit.
Nonetheless, the sales of electronic cigarettes continue to grow to this day, and still grow because of a continuous lack of government regulation. There is relentless heated debate among scholars and scientists about the health and behavioral effects that an e-cigarette has on an individual. Some people argue that e-cigarettes h...
More effective approaches of reducing the burden of cigarette smoking are necessary to give users- who want to quit- a viable method of achieving this goal. The rapid uptake of e- cigarette devices by the general public has fueled the interest of researchers to begin to question whether the e-cigarette is an effective way to help people stop smoking. An e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that converts liquid nicotine into a mist, or vapor, which is inhaled by the user. An e-cigarette has three main parts: a rechargeable lithium battery, a vaporization chamber, and a cartridge. The lithium battery powers the e-cigarette and is connected to the vaporization chamber. The vaporization chamber contains the electronic controls and an atomizer – the part that creates the vapor. The user utilizes a cartridge filled with nicotine liquid to the vaporization chamber. The mouthpiece is located at the tip of the cartridge. “Smoke” is created when the atomizer heats the liquid in th...
...n over 400 ingredients and can create over 4000 chemicals when they are lit. Additionally, some of the chemicals found in the devices that are claimed to be dangerous are found in other foods and products that are being consumed. Proponents of the electronic cigarettes claim argue that the potential benefit they have should be enough to keep the devices from being completely prohibited. In response to the counterarguments, proponents argue that the fact that the devices have shown to increase smoking reduction and abstinence makes them a valuable tool in decreasing tobacco related illnesses and mortality. Because I am arguing that although electronic cigarettes should be more tightly regulated, they should be cautiously implemented as a means to reduce tobacco usage, I will use more research findings to refute the counterarguments and evidence to support their use.
Trying to quit smoking is one of the best things smokers can do for themselves. The effects of smoking can be extremely harmful to the body and bystanders in public areas. Some smokers feel that buying a “fake” cigarette will help them to quit that horrible habit, while others feel that if the cigarette is “only water vapor” it is not harmful to them whatsoever and they will never become addicted. Using these devices has many health concerns and a variety of different issues about them. On the rise today of a potential “fake” cigarette is called an electronic cigarette.
Children know smoking is bad, but they keep hearing positive things about the electronic cigarettes and seeing their idols use them. They have limited knowledge to think otherwise. Furthermore, the item is still too new for there to be proper regulations. People that do not smoke should not be subjected to second hand smoke. Studies concerning the short-term health effects and chemicals inside electronic cigarettes have been documents, but more research needs to be done concerning the long-term effects. At first glance, the electronic cigarette seems to be ideal for current smokers, but the concept is vague and put the general population at risk. Health officials, scientist, and lawmakers are still at a crossroad with their perception on the electronic cigarette. One thing we know for sure is the connection with nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs on the planet, that gateways to other more potent drugs in many cases. People need to know what is going on. This plan will empower more research so people can make the right decision and call for more immediate regulations. The same way tobacco cigarettes are campaigned with every new discovery needs to be the case for electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes should not be able to play the role tobacco cigarettes play in our
The national media spotlight has once again focused its attention on e cigarettes following the release of a study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco. The study questions if e cigarettes can help people quit smoking and if e cigarettes are an effective tobacco alternative. The conclusion of many is that the data shows that e cigarettes are not a better smoking cessation option and are not even effective at helping people reduce their tobacco use. Closer examination of the actual data collected shows several flaws with the conclusions that are currently being widely reported.
Electronic cigarettes have been a massive hit lately in the U.S. market. E-cigarettes do not technically produce smoke, but they do produce vapor and are not much different from ordinary cigarettes. Even though e-cigarette may be considered safer than regular cigarettes it still contains nicotine and other chemicals that are harmful to the human body. E-cigarettes can be a positive measure opposite of tobacco products, but in the long run it is no different than regular cigarettes and could lead to negative outcomes. Thus, e-cigarettes should be restricted, regulated, and be treated as “regular cigarettes.”
Living in a world where many prefer to believe what is shown to them, rather than doing some of their own research, can lead to consequences. (Figure 1) Some people believe electronic cigarettes are a safer and healthier alternative to the actual cigarette because of how they are advertised. “Because they [e-cigs] deliver nicotine without burning tobacco, e-cigarettes are purported to be safer and less toxic than conventional cigarettes. Despite these claims, there’s still no real data on the effects of e-cigarettes (positive or negative), yet marketing materials still bill them as a healthy choice” (Worthington emphasis mine). Drug advertisements normally show the beneficial side of
Almost everyone knows the health risks involved with smoking tobacco. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) give habitual smokers the most promising results of tobacco reduction or cessation. There are some that disagree with the use of e-cigarettes however; the benefits are exceptional for those looking to quit this habit. It significantly lowers their health risks related with smoking tobacco and, unlike cigarettes, it does not release any harmful toxic chemical substances. E-cigarettes are also more cost efficient than buying a pack of cigarettes. Although there are some that oppose the use of the economical e-cigarettes, the advantages are greater because
E-cigarettes have been around for up to 10 years, and have only grown in popularity since then. Because of this rapid growth in popularity, there 's been controversy about whether or not they 're safe. Extending from their unknown risk, is the situation about whether or not they should be allowed in public, as well as the fact that they don 't have much if any restrictions legally. E-cigarettes should be allowed in public, and while some restrictions are deemed necessary, they are much safer than tobacco cigarettes and shouldn 't be viewed as the same thing. E-Cigarettes are a much healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes, they help wean smokers off of tobacco cigarettes, and their health risks compared to tobacco cigarettes are practically
