Ethical or unethical, is the question about contemporary America. It’s really hard to choose a side and fully agree with that choice. Some individuals feel that the ethical events surpass the unethical ones or vise versa. Let’s see how this question would be answered based on the society, which Ursula K. Le Guin writes about in her story, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” Omelas is a beautiful city in which its citizens are happy and carefree. Its citizens have few to no laws, however “[t]hey were not simple folk” (Le Guin 696). These citizens have a small room in which they keep a child that is deprived of life. Some examples are hit and run and driving under influence, which are only a few examples. A case in Sims, North Carolina involving a motor vehicle that impacted two elementary kids as they crossed the street to get on the bus. After the incident, the driver fled the scene and the children were hospitalized with serious injuries. This obstructs the right the children had to not be injured. The driver who was operating without a license and drove off displayed his lack of prudence and didn’t follow the virtue approach. As Adam Owens reports, “the key for drivers [is] to pay attention and stop when a bus has activated its light and stop arm.” This puts children’s lives at risk, which is not in harmony with the common good approach. Drivers need to be responsible while driving and be focused on the road so that fatalities can be avoided. Another motor vehicle incident was the one that occurred in Oklahoma. A male driver impacted another vehicle head on while intoxicated causing the death of a mother and her child. Dee Duren writes that as the mother was transported to the hospital in critical condition, “[h]er 5-year-old daughter was pronounced dead at the scene.” The child did not run with the same luck as the mother. Ethics are important because keep a balance between good and bad, and help people to have morality. They are important because if not taken into account, then society we live in would end in catastrophe. On television all people can see is bad news like car wrecks, armed robberies, kidnaps, mass shootings and other concerning situations. This is due to the fact that individuals decide to not consider the principles of ethics. If everyone were to do as they pleased without following the ethical standards, then it would be hard to live the happy life individuals are entitled to.
