Urethritis is a condition that affects the urethra. The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder so that it can be expelled from the body. In males semen also passes through this tube. This can cause the urethra to become irritated and inflamed. Pain with urination is the most common symptom of urethritis. The main cause of urethritis is normally an infection. It can usually be cured with antibiotics. It has been found that both males and females can develop urethritis. However, females have a much greater chance of developing this condition that males because the females urethra is shorter that the males. Urethritis can affect people of all nationalities and ages. Most cases of urethritis can be contributed to either a bacterial infection or a viral infection. Antibiotics can normally cure urethritis caused by bacteria. Common prescribed antibiotics are Doxycycline, Azithromycin, Levofloxacin, Erythromycin, Metronidazole, and Rocephin. The patient may also take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug along with the antibiotics for symptoms of pain. Urethritis caused by trichomonas infection is usually treated with an antibiotic called Flagyl or Tindamax. The sexual partner should also be treated to prevent reoccurrence of the infection. It is also important to get retested about three months later to make sure the infection is completely cleared. This includes the sexual partner getting retested. Treatment for urethritis due to herpes simplex virus is Zovirax, Famvir, and Valtrex. Often times the exact organism causing urethritis cannot be identified.
