For category 9, I believe finding meaning and enjoyment in life is the most important thing someone can do. If you can find meaning and feel fulfilled through work, personal relationships, and what you do in your free time, I believe you’ll be in good shape. That’s what I strive for. I believe I am at a point in my life where I feel fulfilled in all of these categories. It’s important to build strong relationships with others. The people you put around yourself say a lot about your character and where your life is going. Coming out of high school 12 years ago, I didn’t like where my life was going and who I was spending time with. I felt like I was trapped in a bubble. I tend to treat others as I would like to be treated, and have always been considered a good listener. If a coworker has a problem, whether it be emotional or work related, I recognize the importance of listening and lending support. These interactions build respect and relationships. Part of being a transformational leader is building a foundation of trust and respect. A reciprocal and interdependent relationship then develops, empowering both employees and this increases a sense of belonging (Rolfe, 2011). Morale then can increase, which empowers followers to develop their leadership skills (in theory). These feeling to build relationships with people are genuine for me (and they need to be). Followers will see right through your interest in their well-being as insincere. I think that’s a major aspect of being a successful transformational leader. You need to be honest and careful about your actions with followers. For many this type of leadership comes natural, since it goes in line with their personality. One of my strong suits is being a good critical thinker. In order to be a successful transformational leader, one needs to be aware of the complex relationships you’re building with followers, and how certain actions taken can alter these relationships. Correcting insubordination or inappropriate behavior may damage these relationships that have developed over time. It’s easier to deal with corrective punishments when you’re a different type of leader, such as transactional, since punishment is built into the theory. It comes down to treating others how you’d like to be treated. If you address a certain issue, such as frequent tardiness, with openness and respect, the situation would hopefully get resolved. If it was me in that position, I would respect a leader that was direct with me, told me what my punishment was, and asked what we could do to help remedy the situation. The authoritarian leadership style is not generally well received, so mutual respect is necessary this day and age for a successful
