Tweens These passages present a discussion about arguments concerning whether “tweens” should be allowed to have cell phones. This is an important debate because of the benefits and dangers cellphones present to children in this age range. The two positions argue whether or not it is appropriate to give children between the ages of 8 and 12 cell phones. Both viewpoints have valid points warranting consideration. For example, evidence suggests that cell phones make tweens safer. In contrast, opposing evidence suggests that cell phones pose a danger to younger children. While both sides of the issue have valid points, the position that parents should not allow tweens to have cell phones is the superior argument, the argument supported by the preponderance of the evidence cited in the passages. The strongest and best reasons supporting the argument that cell phones should not be given to tweens are that parents may become too lax in knowing the whereabouts of their children, that children will have access to many inappropriate and dangerous websites, and that children may fall victim to cyberbullying. Why does it matter if tweens are given cell phones or not? Since tweens are less mature than older children, tweens do not know how to handle cell phones responsibly. To keep kids within this age range safe, parents should refuse to give tweens cell phones until they have reached their later teens.
