Should cell phones be allowed to be used in school? Some people think that shouldn’t be allowed in school because students get distracted while others believe it should be allowed in school because in case of an emergency. I think that it should be because they can use cell for emergency phones, using them for education proposes, for communication with their parents and their friends.
All of these concerns constitute what we might call the “dark side” of mobile phones,” (Baron). Researchers have found many different reasons why cell phones are inconvenient. They often run out of battery quickly and may be expensive to have. Some say they even cause harmful radiation to your body, but you have to realize how many good things cell phones bring to people. “PACG express that teenagers are addicted and obsessed with texting, while some of the PACG feel that it distracts the teenagers from their study time and other important activities,” (Ravidchandran). These are among the many reasons why many parents don’t think their teenagers should have cell phones. “They believe that plugged-in kids could be missing out on other activities, such as playing outside or hanging out with friends, and that sending text messages or fielding phone calls while doing homework is bad for concentration,” (Rochman). Parents feel like their children will be unproductive, and won’t get school work done, or they won’t have time for other important activities they are involved
Cell phones they are everywhere nowadays, they have become a need in the eye of the public. One feels much more connected to others with a cell phone in hand. Cell phones are small and portable yet provide so much to its user with being able to look up anything to calling your parents in case of an emergency or if you need to give them a heads up on something. With the way things are today people need to focus on incorporating cell phones into daily life and finding ways to make them more suitable in a classroom environment. Kids using cell phones and other tablets are becoming more and more distant from their parents, for the simple fact that the Kids are on the tablets/phones more often than they are with their parents, and as a child you need to bond with your parents and not a tablet/phone. According to the Pew Research Center at Harvard University, “78% of teens now have a cell phone, and almost half (47%) of those own smartphones” (Pew Research). There is no question that the number of American teenagers that own cell phones is increasing as technology continuously advances in today’s society. So many developments in cellular technology explain why teenagers crave the latest cell phone on the market. Parents of teenagers have to make the decision of whether or not their teen should own the newest phone. Surprisingly, these small portable phones have created a controversy among many parents and pediatricians among America. Some believe that teenagers should have a cell phone to provide safety and assurance to the teens and their parents. Firstly, cell phones are a useful object when needed in an emergency. When parents need to contact their kids, they would have access to talk with them on their cell phones. People say "But there's phones in the office", So? What if office staff are out for lunch? What if the emergency happens at their parent’s work place? So, what would they do? Go out and look for them? Cell phones are very useful in that situation! If an emergency happens how would their kids know when to turn their phones on? So, a good comprise would be to turn on your phone and set it on vibrate. Schools should allow cell phones in school for children's protection and safety.
One advantage of having a cell phone is that its very helpful when a person needs to contact a friend or a family member (9). For example, when someone is lost in a place they have never been in. But now a days people owning a cell phone can never get lost because now phones have a map that tells you where your location is. If 75 percent or more of our youth have cell phones and smart phones and are comfortable using them, why don't we uses them as learning tools in school? Schools and teachers rejecting and denying the use of cell phones are basically turning their backs to an outstanding learning tool that could tremendously improve the learning environment.
