Transforming Nursing Leadership Nurses play an essential role in a holistic approach towards health care delivery, spent most of the time with the patient and their families in educating, advocating, solving the problem and leading them towards the right direction. My topic is “the future of Nursing in Home Healthcare Is Now” (Home Healthcare Nurse, 2012). In 1867, Florance Nightingale predicted that by the year 2000, more nurses will be working in the home. However, the above article highlighted that lack of home health agencies in planning, training and leadership roles” (Duckett, 2012). In my opinion, Leadership, training, and education is the foundation of the home health nursing. In-home environment, patient, and family depend on the nurse's decisions as nurses are the bridge between physician and patient. The estimate is that by 2020 there will be 50 million people over the age of 65 and roughly 70% of that will be home health care and rest assisted living ”( Landers, Madigan, & Leff, 2016). It will naturally bring many opportunistic investors in this field. That is the reason, why home health care business is expanding, and that will bring serious challenges as well. Being said that, to run home healthcare business efficiently, will eventually fall on nurses. Another significant challenge, facing this industry is keeping sincerity and integrity. Especially when investor only worries about their profit. The nursing field is full of leaders that have changed the processes of how things are done; laying the ground work for future nurses to follow and improve practice upon. Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. The future of nursing is in the hands of nurses themselves. By encouraging further education and continuing education, the profession of nursing will continue to evolve and gain power. By learning to speak out and publicize the plight of nursing today, nurses can either help the public understand why the healthcare system needs to change, and how changes can be made, or if done carelessly, may contribute to a negative image in the public eye. I think nurses hold the power to change the healthcare system in our country, but we must first become organized and work together.
Nurses are uniquely qualified to fill a demand for change through leadership. Unlike business minded individuals whose primary outcome concern is monetary, a nurses’ primary concern is organic: a living, breathing, tangible being. In a leadership role, a nurse might consider an organization as if it were a grouping of patients, or perhaps an individual patient, each limb with its own characteristics and distinct concerns. They can effectively categorize and prioritize important personal and professional matters and are therefore ideally positioned to lead change efforts. Perhaps most importantly, effective nurse leaders can provide clarity to the common goal and empower others to see their self-interests served by a better common good (Yancer, 2012).

For some time I was under the great misconception that nurses play a relatively small role when it comes to patient care. Various T.V. shows that I had watched emphasized the role of doctors and portrayed nurses as more of a handmaiden than anything else. This outlook was forever changed when my grandmother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Being a vibrant and quick-witted seventy-nine year old, she made it clear to our family that a nursing home was not in the cards for her. Our next option was hiring a home health nurse. At first my grandmother struggled with the idea of having regular assistance since she had always been such an independent individual.
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
Nurses play an important role in helping families become competent and more confident as they engage in the healthcare of themselves and their loved ones. We will examine the nurse’s role in home visit programs, community nursing centers, public health departments, home education and community education. In addition, we will see how they have benefited and impacted the families in these settings and ways the family health nurse is useful as a community resource.
