Examining the impact of toxic leadership
Organizations have become more competitive and have involuntary change ethical leadership behaviors with toxic behaviors. Senior Enlisted Leaders should understand the importance of identifying toxic leadership behaviors because it negatively affects personnel and the organization. This paper will cover toxic leadership background information, toxic leadership traits and behaviors, impact of toxic leadership, and recommendations for taking appropriate actions against toxic leadership.

Unlike ethical leaders, toxic leaders are motivated on self-recognition and do not care about others or the organization. According to Kim (2016, July 16), toxic leaders often exhibit eight common traits and behaviors. Toxic leaders are reluctant to listen to others that may have an opposing view. Any action is strongly driven by the leader’s self-advancement. Toxic leaders are not authentic, they are dishonest with anyone that they see as a threat. They engage in unethical behaviors such as unfairness with little to no empathy for others. They do not hold personnel engaging in negative behavior accountable, instead they ignore the act due to protecting their perfect leader image. They lack mentorship abilities due to not caring for others to succeed. They favor conformist personnel. With today’s principles placing importance on economic stability, the work environment has become another home for people (Kim, 2016, July 16). The work environment has become a necessity of life, socially and financially where employees build their majority of relationships. Having a toxic leader in your workplace may damage positive and healthy established employee relationships. Toxic leaders may create a hostile environment and destroy an employee’s social stability by increasing their stress. High levels of stress may produce dissatisfaction, attrition, resentment, and lack of motivation which may ultimately lead to mental illnesses. All these consequences leads to lower productivity hence affecting the organization as a whole.
