In Peter Singer’s work, “The Life You Can Save,” he presents the famous scenario of a child drowning in a shallow pond. Dee was Dee but Dee had changed; a new husband, nice clothes, and a college degree to boat. Maybe that college degree certificate could be farmed and hung on the wall replacing that old photo of George Washington Carver, out with the old and in with the new. Alice Walker is showing how one’s education influences thoughts about traditions. There are two different ways of thinking about the traditions and the author realizes and put them as two characters in the story. The evidence of culture and traditions become very clear with the introduction of the family quilt. For example, Dee says that “the quilts are priceless” and decides to keep them as a material substances. Maggie, her sister, also sees the quilt as priceless but priceless as it relates to her culture. Walker focuses on African American heritage and its value. She emphasizes that cultures are the foundation of families and pointing out to the reader that traditions are rooted in everyday use.
"Let's Talk About Mental Health" by Cindy Troy from New York establishes the importance of acknowledging mental health through her very own experience. Her description of depression is heart-pounding as the readers can relate to it. She's points out how society views the concept of a rotting mentality to be an enigma that an individual has to face on their own. However, her family and friend's have pulled her out of an abyss of flames with gathering support. Despite that, a number of the people around her were shocked at the thought she was depressed, as if depression was created from thin air, they didn't know how to respond to it. The Overachievers by Alexandra Robbins is a non- fiction book that follows the lives of nine high school/ college overachieving students. On the outside they look healthy, happy, and perfect, but upon closer look the reader realizes just how manic their lives and the lives of many other high scholars are. It is no secret that high school and college has become more competitive, but the public doesn’t realize just out of control this world is. “Overachieverism” has become a way of life, a social norm. It is a world-wide phenomenon that has swamped many of the world’s top countries. Students are breaking under the immense amount of pressure that society puts on them. They live in constant fear that they will not live up to society’s, or their own, standards. People have put so much emphasis on students to succeed and to outperform their peers, and all before them, that it is changing them, and is having irreversible effects on them.
In Dave Ramsey’s book titled The Total Money Makeover, he outlines seven baby steps to achieve financial freedom. They are as follows: first, build an emergency fund. In his book, Everything is Obvious, Duncan Watt starts off reasonably well in explaining how certain beliefs or perceptions influence our way of thinking and decision making. These sets of beliefs are accumulated through past experiences, surrounding environments and cultures in which collectively form the philosophy of common sense. Though common sense is powerful tool that helps us navigate through our life smoothly without encumbering our brains into reflecting on every single detail. The author considers it as a set of fallible mental patterns that are invisible to us, yet have a powerful affect that extends to our way of thinking as well predicting the future of certain things in our life. In the book, Watt exposes the reality of common sense which convinces us that we know more than what we really do. Consequently, we keep making same mistakes and learning less from the past.
