When reading a story, you will often discover similarities in the human experience. We love stories because our lives are stories and we are all a part of God’s bigger story. A story can be impactful because it can cause the reader to consider their own life and sometimes relate. A reaction to a good story can even change the readers perspective on how they view people and circumstances surrounding them. To dive deeper in to literature, it is helpful to synthesize multiple stories to see how they collectively display different elements within a story. Important elements of a story include themes, characters, conflict along with others. Themes within a good story can vary greatly. The reader needs to see characters, who like themselves, struggle with adversity and then long to see a solution. Lessons can be learned from conflict and hope can be found when the conflict is resolved. For example, pain is a conflict that all of us can relate with. In the Odyssey, Odysseus feels the ongoing pain of struggling to return home to his wife in Ithaca. (The Odyssey 54-55; bk. 4.555-8). The Bible describes another character named Job, that endures the incredible pain of having everything he loves stripped from him. (ESV Job 1:13-22). Fear is another emotion most readers can relate with and is represented in many conflicts within a story. In Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermia and Lysander have a fear of not knowing what to do since their love is forbidden. (MND 1.1 215-220). Another example of fear is in the Bible, when Peter denied knowing Christ three times. He felt fear that he would be punished by being associated with Jesus. (ESV John 18: 15-27). The enemies encountered by characters in a story is another example of conflict. Many stories have a conflict that requires overcoming enemies, real or imagine, to reach the ultimate goal. An example of enemies would be the Trojan army versus the Greek army in the Iliad. (the Iliad 347; bk 19.360-370). Another example of enemies within a story is Aslan and the White Witch in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, as they battle for control of Narnia. (The Lion, the …show more content…
Without them, the story would not make sense and would not be readable. The theme of the story is what hooks the reader. If you asked a reader in one word what the story was about, the theme would be what they would say. The characters are what makes a story believable. As the reader relates their own life to the characters in the story, they are drawn in to the storyline. The conflict experienced in a story is what draws the attention of the reader and then satisfies them in the conclusion. Conflict is a part of all our lives, so every story should involve this important element. Good stories stir the soul of the reader and leave them wanting
The idea of good versus evil is illustrated in several ways in John Steinbeck's East of Eden. This is seen through the external conflicts in the novel, the internal conflicts of the characters, and a universal understanding of the battle between good and evil.
In the fables, the protagonists must face against their enemies. “El Grillo y el Jaguar” has the cricket opposing the jaguar, while the donkey is against the foxes in “The Hero
The importance of a story is to have a purpose and meaning, through this, people are able to engage and learn with what is being told to them, it has to have a connection to the past, bringing it to the present and to involve both the body and mind senses. Through storytelling the audience should gain an understanding and have a sense of emotion touched and come alive, they should also be able to explore the possibilities within their culture and feel a deep connection to country.
What makes up a good story? This essay discusses that short stories are better than other stories because they’re short, characters, and theme. The characters job is to put it simply a character is any person, animal, or creature in a story. A themes job is the main idea or an underlying meaning of a literacy work that may be stated directly or stated indirectly.
"All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil." This means that all conflict in any work is basically just a fight between the forces of good and evil. The Crucible by Arthur Miller and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne show that this statement is true.
Theme is a message about life or human nature that the author writes about to get the reader to understand their work. Theme is important in writing because it helps the reader understand the story and better connect to main idea that the author is trying to convey. The two text that will be focused on are To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and various short stories from Eight Men by Richard Wright. To Kill A Mockingbird tells a story of the events that occur in the town of Maycomb County, Alabama, through the eyes of a young and curious girl named Jean Louise Finch (a.k.a Scout). Eight Men features eight short stories about eight men who encounter different situations.
To take Lancelot as an example, the conflict that when he has to decide whether or not he should go into the cart so that he can get closer to the queen exemplified this well. Emotions and actions of characters usually effect each other and make the audience feel like that it’s like themselves. In epics, the characters are far away from the readers because they’re heroes. But in the Arthurian Romance, the characters is much more similar to the audience because of their emotions, the emotions of them make characters like a real human rather than a legend. This theme is prominent and
A narrative is specified to amuse, to attract, and grasp a reader’s attention. The types of narratives are fictitious, real or unification or both. However, they may consist of folk tale stories, mysteries, science fiction; romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, and personal experience (“Narrative,” 2008). Therefore, narrative text has five shared elements. These are setting, characters, plot, theme, and vocabulary (“Narrative and Informational Text,” 2008). Narrative literature is originally written to communicate a story. Therefore, narrative literature that is written in an excellent way will have conflicts and can discuss shared aspects of human occurrence.
Actually stories can be funny and a way to cheer people up and make them laugh. In haroun the author puts in some funny moments like when blabbermouth(a character who’s a book) said “don't judge a book by it's cover”(Rushdie 62). They can be exciting like an adventure, like Haroun and the sea of stories. Adventure stories are the most popular genre. Stories can also be mysterious like if someone has lost their phone in the past and never found it or knew what happened to it that could be a story for the future.
The Main Themes of the Odyssey A theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. It usually is an important notion that the author wants the reader to learn from their literary work. The main characters either possess these characteristics, which leads the reader to want what that character contains, or the character lacks the characteristic, which leads to their downfall. Theme is significant in Homer’s
There is a lot of conflict in the book Before We Were Free. In all the conflicts, it was between good and evil. Conflicts happen in the story to make it right and that is why "Before We Were Free" demonstrated conflict the best and it proved Anon's statement true. Conflicts happen in every story and that is what builds the plot. The conflicts in this story built suspense and it helped further the
The last two points include structure and the tone of the narrator, or author. As I disclosed earlier, recognizing and paying attention to the structure of the story is important. The structure of the story, combined with the theme and plot, would help inform and reflect back on each other. When starting off the story with the framework and other literary elements, they all rely on structure. When the author develops the story, the structure is what holds all of his ideas together.
Determine all of the story's conflicts. Determine the major conflict and state this in terms of protagonist versus antagonist.
