“All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil.” This is a quote by Anon and if analyzed is easily true. It is saying that literature has developed and is based off of the idea of the struggle between good and evil. The idea of a difference between good and evil can be found in anything, even events that occur in the real world happen because of this idea presented by Anon. Although this can be interpreted in many different ways it is still used as the base of all pieces of literature that have ever been written. Authors get to decide how they integrate this idea into their literature which is by how they interpret it, making every piece of literature unique. Tio Toni and a handful or other rebels hated the dictator, Rafael Trujillo, who is also known as El Jefe. They tried to assassinate him, but they filed. Then the government secret police, S.I.M., started going after Tio Toni and searching houses. This is a conflict because it was between good and evil: Tio Toni doing something good for the Dominican Republic and bad: the S.I.M. going through everyone's houses to search for rebels. The third occurrence of conflict was human versus group, which is found in chapter 10. El Jefe’s youngest brother was Hector Trujillo. He hated the group that tried to assassinate his brother. At the end of the book, when he got hold of Tio Toni and Anita’s dad, he decided to kill them. He hated them so much, he thought the best way to get rid of them was to kill them. The conflict was between Hector and the assassins. They can be viewed as both good and bad.

There is a lot of conflict in the book Before We Were Free. In all the conflicts, it was between good and evil. Conflicts happen in the story to make it right and that is why "Before We Were Free" demonstrated conflict the best and it proved Anon's statement true.
