Love is one of the most powerful emotions man can obtain. In The Great Gatsby, love is the motivation for the extreme actions occurring in the novel. Jay Gatsby changed his entire life and had an affair and George Wilson killed for the sake of this overbearing love. Love can drive people to do absurd things, without paying any mind to the destruction it has caused.

During the time of the World War I, Jay Gatsby, a dirt poor farm boy from North Dakota met Daisy Fay, a young girl from a wealthy family in Kentucky. Gatsby knew he would never gain Daisy's love if he could not give her all of the things she desired, so he lied about having money and a wealthy family. Gatsby headed overseas to accumulate wealth, while Daisy waited for him to return. After five years of waiting for Gatsby to return, Daisy married Tom Buchanan. After hearing of Daisy's marriage, Gatsby engaged into the illegal bootlegging business to make more money. Gatsby built an astonishing mansion just across the water from Daisy's home. It is full of everything he and Daisy once planned for themselves. Every weekend Gatsby hosts extravagant parties where all of New York comes, in hopes Daisy will wander in. This was the life Daisy and Gatsby had always dreamed of for themselves. She begins to visit Gatsby frequently as he spoils her with affection and she also begins attending his parties. This is when the two of them establish an affair together. Gatsby is so infatuated with Daisy he admits their affair to Tom. Gatsby was bold enough to tell Tom Daisy had never loved Tom and only loves him. Gatsby was willing to do whatever it took to be with Daisy even if she was still married to another
