"The Great Gatsby" is a book full of passion. There is Gatsby 's passionate love for Daisy. There is Tom 's passion for money. When reading this book I realized that these people broke the American dream in their time. They couldn 't be happy when all they did was chase money. The Great Gatsby was full of themes, motif 's, and symbolism and the way that fitzgerald used his characters to get his point across of what it was like back them was marvelous. Jay Gatsby is the protagonist in the story. The protagonist is the leading character. Gatsby has a huge fortune and lives next to Nick Carraway in a huge gothic mansion. Every Saturday night he throws lavish parties in hopes that the girl he loves, Daisy Buchanan, will notice that he is there. Gatsby made his fortune through criminal activity. So he is obviously deeply flawed. But he has a big heart and everything he did was so that he could win the woman that he loved back. Nick Carraway is the Narrator of the story. He had just moved to West Egg, Long Island from Minnesota to learn about the bond business. He is honest and tolerates a lot of things, but most importantly, he is Daisy 's cousin. The whole point of the American dream was basically life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In the 1920 's the whole idea of the American dream crumbled. Instead of searching for happiness, people were searching for money, and didn 't matter if they were happy as long as they were rich, it didn 't matter. So there was no American dream in the 1920 's. It shouldn 't matter how much money you have, all that should matter is that you are happy, and your family is happy. What is the point of life if you just run after money your whole life then die. Young James Gatz had always had dreams of being upper class, he didn't only want to have wealth, but he wanted to live the way the wealthy lived. At a young age he ran away from home; on the way he met Dan Cody, a rich sailor who taught him much of what he would later use to give the world an impression that he was wealthy. After becoming a soldier, Gatsby met an upper class girl named Daisy - the two fell in love. When he came back from the war Daisy had grown impatient of waiting for him and married a man named Tom Buchanan. Gatsby now has two coinciding dreams to chase after - wealth and love. Symbols in the story, such as the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, the contrast between the East Egg and West Egg, and the death of Myrtle, Gatsby, and Wilson work together to expose a larger theme in the story. Gatsby develops this idea that wealth can bring anything - status, love, and even the past; but what Gatsby doesn't realize is that wealth can only bring so much, and it’s this fatal mistake that leads to the death of his dreams.

Gatsby started off as a poor man who has to struggle through life. The only nice clothes that he has is his army uniform, which Daisy, his girlfriend enjoys when he wears she thinks that he looks nice. Gatsby is in love with Daisy and she is in love with him but because he was so poor they cannot get married. To survive Gatsby has to join the army and when he goes to war Daisy marries Tom, a rich stockbroker from New York, who gives Daisy a life of luxury. The problem, unbeknown to Daisy is that he is cheating on her. When Gatsby returns from battle he notices that Daisy has married a rich man and after realizing that Daisy was after Tom’s money Gatsby figures that the only way to get her back is by becoming rich himself. Once Gatsby has his dream of being rich he makes it his goal in life…to fulfill the needs of Daisy and marry her. The Jazz age was a convivial time known for innovation, creativity, and women pushing the limits of their new found freedom, but it was also a time of mourning and loss after the end of World War I. The combination of these emotions is what made the roaring twenties so unique, yet unstable. Before the twenties, the American dream had been to earn a stable income and raise a family in the great country that is America, but during the twenties the American dream became much more diminished as people worked for riches and luxuries that only a few could afford. In The Great Gatsby the main characters are striving for this dream of riches in a turbulent setting, but ironically are blinded by the distractions of the Jazz age and they do not realize until it is too late that they have been walking away from their own dreams. If Gatsby had money, Daisy and her voice full of money, and everything else he wanted, would that crush the American Dream. Could it be that the reason the American dream was dying is because they based it all on material objects and not on honesty, trust, and love? In the 1920's, the era was full of greediness, dishonesty, cynicism, and empty pursuit of happiness. How could anyone even trust their own spouse, you would have to be worrying about them all the time and you would be sceptical of everything they did. Everyone would be out for themselves, so no one could even try to make another happy because they would be too worried about themselves to care about others dreams and happiness. Perhaps if they had of restored the original American dream, then it would have turned out a lot better. The original dream was discovery, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness. This original dream probably would have made almost everyone happy even the poor people because other wealthier people might help them out, instead of being greedy like in the corrupted dream. Also, I believe that not as many people would have died in this novel if the American dream was the original and not the corrupted, evil dream of the 1920's. So, the quote, "Her voice is full of money," is referring to the corrupt dream the world conformed to in the 1920's.
Gatsby is largely a mystery at the story’s beginning, defined by his wealth and influence as well as the rumors that flood the gossip lanes. He resides in West Egg, home of the nouveaux riche, across the sound from East Egg, where the established older money claims home to. He’s largely known for his extravagant parties, open to all corners of society, but he doesn’t participate in none of them. His actions prompt one to guess a reason, which revealed is the sole reason for all of Gatsby’s achievements. When becoming friends with Nick Carraway, he gives him his back story – his family, his travels in Europe, his service in WW1 and his college days in Oxford – all to give him proof that he stems from the same pool of individuals as Nick does. This also unveils Gatsby to be innocent, and honest with most people, traits that come into conflict with his foil the aristocratic bully Tom Buchanan (Daisy’s husband). Even early on, the myth of Jay Gatsby starts to crumble away as its revealed he came to his wealth through criminal endeavors, confirmed by his meeting with Meyer Wolfshiem.
