Believing is Seeing When I was going through my teen years, I depended on songs to help me cope with my feelings. Songs with a deep meaning and an upbeat vibe always interested me the most. One of my favorite artists during this time was Katy Perry and here wide array of songs. I was always impressed and intrigued to know that she writes most of her songs herself, along with a few co-writers. She writes her songs in a poetic manner, which especially stands out in one of her most popular songs, “Firework”. This song is poetic because of its use of rhyme, alliteration, and theme. This theme is first shown by relating the audience to low self-esteem and doubts through rhetorical questions, such as “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag / Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?” (1-2) and then relates to fireworks to make the listeners feel good about themselves, in the line “Baby, you’re a firework” (15). The song focuses on embracing what they can do by shocking those who made them doubt themselves. This is highlighted in the line that states “Come on, show ‘em what you’re worth” (12). I believe Katy Perry wrote the song to help listeners feel like they are worth it, even if they feel they are not good enough. Being able to emotionally connect and inspire an audience makes her a great artist and song
