The Wrong Messages Being Sent Out about Sex and Sexuality

In the film 2 Young, there were two teenagers, Ka fu and Natalie. After they met and fall in love, once an opportunity for two of them to have a weak moment in their blossoming love, which results in Natalie’ s pregnancy. Before Natalie gave birth to the baby, Natalie and Ka fu considered abortion and living by themselves, however, these were too dangerous and too harsh for two teenagers.

When I was a secondary student, I didn't receive any proper and formal lesson about sex education, and I have read much news about teenage pregnancy, then I started to be aware of this topic. After learning and reading research studies for my own and for this speech, I’m here to ask you to listen with an open mind while we discuss some of the problems associated with lack of sex education, the major cause of it and how can we deal with the problems. But let’s start by taking a closer look at the problem.

According to the Hong Kong Economic Times, the pregnancy rate amongst teenage girls in Hong Kong was rising in recent years, with most of them are from lower income group. Alia Eyres, chief executive of Mother’s Choice, a non-profit community organization that provides care for single girls and their families facing unwanted pregnancies, said that the statistic from last year show that a total of 3066 pregnant unmarried women had seek them for help, 8.6% higher than the previous year. And there were 27% were under the age of 18, the youngest was only 12 years old.
Also, according to a survey conducted by the Federation of Youth Groups, about one-third of teenagers aged between 10 and 15 believe that sex and dating come in a package, and one-fifth of respondents admitted they h...

...to be active, and should not be afraid of asking questions about sex from senior, we should start to open our mind to receive proper sex education. Therefore, we can overcome the feeling of embarrassment to teach our own child in the future, and try to avoid the problems I have talk about before. The effect of this can’t be underestimated; this may create a better society in the future with fewer problems such as teenage pregnancy.

In closing, we really need to get away from the old tradition thoughts and open our mind about ‘sex’. Having a positive attitude towards it, and promote better sex education to teenagers is the only way to deal with teenage pregnancy and misunderstand of sex. “Knowledge is power, education is key to what we do to change entrenched views, create awareness and take a preventative stance.” by Mother’s Choice.
