A Pulitzer Prize is an award for an achievement in American journalism, literature, or music. Paul Gigot, chairman of the Pulitzer Prize board, described the award as a “proud and robust tradition”. How does one carry on this robust tradition? By mastery of skilled writing technique, one can be considered for the awarding of this prize. Since its creation in 1917, 13 have been awarded annually, one of which, in 1939, was given to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for her novel, The Yearling. Rawlings is an American author from Florida known for writing rural themed novels. Consequently, The Yearling is about a boy living on a farm who adopts an orphaned fawn. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings procured a prestigious Pulitzer Prize for her effectual use of figurative language, sensory details, and syntax.
The title of the short story, “Four Directions” is symbolic for Waverly’s inner misconceptions. As she goes about her life, she is pulled in different ways by her past and her present. She is torn between her Chinese heritage and her American life. She never thought that instead of being pulled in four directions, she could take all of her differences and combine them. In the end she realizes this with the help of her mother. “The three of us, leaving our differences behind...moving West to reach East” (184), thought Waverly. Over the past few years the world has became full of atrocious and bloodthirsty people. With social media, it gives the world an anonymous passageway to tear people down and tell them they're not good enough. With all the hate crimes and prejudice concepts, people lose focus on what's truly important. Naomi Shihab Nye portrayed this message through her poem “Shoulders,” which explains that people can't not live in a world without lending a helping hand. People need to help one another and not push people down when they just got up. Without assistance from others, would there really be a human race? This poem expresses the need to help others, through imagery, figurative language, and alliteration.
The speaker organized the presentation very well and made it easy to follow for the audience. She chose words that got the message across clearly and were not difficult to understand. Since this was targeted at a younger audience, she simplified the concepts and was very specific. The sentences of the speech were structured appropriately, and had no grammatical errors. She also included some transitions in between, especially when moving from one idea to the next which made the flow
Her slow yet concise way of speaking, coupled with easy to follow transitions allowed for a speech that was enjoyable to listen to. Her use of examples from her personal life allowed her audience to get a picture of who she was if they did not know, and allowed her to better relate to them by provided examples of how she is related to the college they are graduating from. Her reference to many modern political problems allowed her to bring up her important role as an activist and facilitated further understanding from the audience. While some areas of her speech were weak, such as the longer than needed pauses and her lack of consistent eye contact, to a few points where she didn’t speak clearly enough, the overall picture that was her speech was fairly strong. Looking at this speech, I hope to incorporate some aspects that I failed to include in my previous speeches. In the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Charlotte Perkins Gilman writes about her confusing, yet interesting life in isolation, and how she digresses throughout the three months. The narrator is astonished to the fullest extent by many eye-catching objects and hidden details found within the room. Her thoughts about the room are very contradictory and she is thoroughly indecisive in her feelings for this room. Throughout the story, the narrator mentally deteriorates as shown through her tendency to shift from hating the room to obsessing over the room; the author uses strong figurative language and contradictory connotations to reveal the narrator’s thoughts and emotions to the reader.
You could tell that she was very passionate about the subject of eating organic food. At the end, Meagan talks about her personal story being that about a year ago she started eating organic food. She explained how her bank account is not broken, and how she used to be really tired but now she wakes up early, goes to the gym and eats little organic meals throughout the day and feels so much better than she used to. I really enjoy how Meagan brought her personal life into this, because I think this is very important in a speech but my personal opinion would be that she put it more towards the beginning of the speech rather than the end. I think this would be a good way to keep the audience focused throughout the speech. I think Meagan’s delivery of the speech was really good and interesting. Her eye contact was usually good but it was very clear that she was reading directly off of the paper but you could tell it was very organized. She didn’t move much, she stood in the same spot, I think it was good that she stayed n the same spot but I think she should’ve moved her hands a little more. I think her change in voice could’ve been a little better because she seemed to have the same tone through the whole speech. Otherwise, she did an amazing job at her pronunciations. O’Brien discusses the gory detailed chaos of the Vietnam war and his fellow “soldiers.” As O’Brien gives detail of the his “fictional” experiences, he explains why he joined the war. Salt to The Sea is a book by Ruta sepetys about 4 people trying to escape the grasps of the russians and in the case of Florian the nazis. They cross the countryside and land at a port. The people in the audience sat mesmerized from the moment Oliver Camacho topened with, “Comfort ye my people.” It sent chills running through my spine. His voice was just so breath-taking!
