Girls born into a society that hates women, will begin to subtly hate women themselves. This is sometimes called “internalized misogyny”. A young girl would never intentionally hate her own gender, but the ideas that surround her will eventually become the basis of her belief system. Girls call other girls names for dating the boy that they like, wearing too much makeup, or for dressing in revealing clothing. Girls do not fabricate these ideas in their own heads though, they are planted there. When a girl resents another, instead of handling her negative feelings, she learns to blame the female gender entirely. While many try to disprove its existence or explain its reasoning, the wage gap exists, and it is an unfair hurdle in the life of a woman. How would you feel, if you had worked just as much as someone, just as hard as someone, and by some miracle obtained the same level job as someone, just to find out no matter what you do, you will make less than that person, simply because of your gender? This is the harsh reality that women have to face. As of 2013, women were paid on average, 78% of what men were paid. The wage gap varies by state, by age, and by skin color. The largest wage gap is present in Hispanic women’s salary. Hispanic women receive 54% of men’s pay. The state with the highest wage gap is Louisiana, where women make 66% of what men make, and the state with the lowest wage gap is DC, where women make 91% of what men make. Feminism bands groups of girls together to fight against oppressing ideologies and liberate women globally. 21st century American feminism is unapologetic and cannot be satisfied with the place America is at culturally. This movement will not stop until society recognizes injustices women face due to their gender, and addresses them. While feminism is sometimes referred to as a “cult”, because of its members’ efforts to teach and get others involved, feminism is genuinely a set of ideas that promote freedom of choice and equality.
