All the students, in our dormitory have signed a petition requesting that more security personnel be on duty throughout the night. As it became harder for the smoker to breathe, she decided to except her doctor's advice and give up cigarettes. Sherlock Holmes, who's my favorite fictional detective, is featured in _The Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Because the mud in that field is deeper than it appears to be, people should'nt attempt to ride their bicycles through
I used Greenfeld’s sentence idea “I’m not interested in the debates over teaching to the test or No Child Left Behind. What I am interested in is what my daughter is doing during those nightly hours between 8 o’clock and midnight, when she finally gets to bed.” in my D.A.R.E. essay when I said “I’m not here to explain why underage drinking is actually good for the youth of America or to fight the drinking age. I’m here to say why … D.A.R.E. needs to prioritize safety over law enforcement.” because I loved the idea of brutal honesty so much, and I thought it was a bold way to get the point across to the audience to forget the counterargument and related subjects for a
This essay will examine both "The Speckled Band" by Conan Doyle and "Visitors" by Brian Moon and will look at how each one conforms to or diverges from the conventions of the detective story and also how each story is representative of the century it was written in by how it presents the woman, the hero and the villain.
Using anecdotes from his life were very effective because he shows the stages he went through: the side of the non-smoker who is against smoking, to a smoker, to any individual trying to quit, and adds family examples along the way. This worked very well because the readers get to see how Sedaris has evolved throughout his life. Anecdotes were also effective because of how he addresses his audience. He reaches out to all types of audience, whether you are a non- smoker, or a smoker, or even a former smoker. Knowing that he was once faced with these stages makes Sedaris approachable because he has experienced it all .He has even lost family members along the way due to cigarettes. Sedaris does not say word for word that smoking is negative, but based on his essay we can tell he believes this even through him, himself was a smoker. Using anecdotes Sedaris expresses his understanding of the topic, since he knows what he is talking about because he has experienced himself. This approach of showing the negatives of smoking through anecdotes works better than having a doctor explain all the medical reason why not to smoke because the information is being given from a relatable source. Sedaris uses his own experience to allow induvials’ to take the message however they please. This essay is not written in a pressure some way. If a smoker were to read this essay they could
In his essay, Bernard had many writing strategies and components that I found interesting and helpful when writing my own paper. One piece of his essay that I especially liked was his introduction. He began his essay with a quote from a famous person, which inspired me to begin my essay with a quote from someone with higher authority and knowledge on my topic: Wayne LaPierre, National Rifle Association’s President.
In conclusion, we see that the nature of printed literature has changed nowadays as well as the way of thinking. We are on the road of losing our concentration, awareness and serious thinking abilities. We are faced with such negative effects as cyber bullying and Internet manipulations. I think it is not the direction we should move on.
Brimelow makes a gallant effort to prove his major claim, or main idea (McFadden). He wants to get the audience to concur with him that smoking is not an altogether unhealthy habit (Brimelow 141). However, mistakes in his essay begin with his major claim statement. When Brimelow writes that “smoking might be, in some ways, good for you” (141), he already puts doubts in the minds of the audience. Instead of feeling that the author is confident about his position on the subject, the audience picks up on the skepticism hidden in the words “might” and “some small ways.” Those qualifiers, or words and phrases that exclude some situations from his major claim (McFadden), leave the audience questioning who it is beneficial for and in what situations.
...eral topic of school. The sister strives to graduate and go to school even though she is poor while her brother blames the school for him dropping out and not graduating. “I got out my social studies. Hot legs has this idea of a test every Wednesday” (118). This demonstrates that she is driven to study for class and get good grades while her brother tries to convince her that school is worth nothing and that there is no point in attending. “‘Why don’t you get out before they chuck you out. That’s all crap,’ he said, knocking the books across the floor. ‘You’ll only fail your exam and they don’t want failures, spoils their bloody numbers. They’ll ask you to leave, see if they don’t’” (118). The brother tries to convince his sister that school is not a necessity and that living the way he does, being a drop out living in a poverty stricken family is the best thing.
Finally, here I am typing this assignment on the first floor of the library finishing this paper so I’m able to continue onto my college and career journey. I’ve learned so many thing in just the past couple years that’s helped with other situations in my life and I will carry them to help me along with things through the rest of my life; like multitasking, highlighting the important facts, summarizing, communicating, to not be so self conscious, and finally to be successful in pursuing my dreams and going to UNLV and becoming a criminal profiler.
Profiles were the next essay on the list for writing in which I chose my smoke spot right off campus. This essay I was only supposed to vividly describe a spot we often visit. Though I took the subject to a personal level criticizing the way society views smokers through description of the drainage ditch ...

Teenagers and Adults, Smoking/Cigarettes. Most people tend to think of those clubs with the drum and a few instruments on the stage, with the words being spoken by a guy wearing black and a beanie placed on his head. But it’s more than coffee and a crowd. It such a simple word, a simple way of amplifying a situation, a way to subtle give a message or blatantly point it out. Especially if it can change a person’s life, to better it, by quitting something harmful to their health like smoking. There is one man whom has gotten his point across, Nick Flynn has passed on a message that is clear and honest, in Some Ether, “I know cigarettes can kill & wonder why she wants to die.” (GoodReads Inc. 2). Cigarettes can lead to many different pains, whether they be losing several pieces of their body from a fingers to a leg…or worse. It’s not just a blackened lung and a lifelong cough, it is a destruction that can or will last a lifetime and not just to the smoker.

2. One behavior that was once viewed as “non-deviant” was smoking cigarettes. Whether it was in buildings, restaurants, or even class rooms, smoking was seen as a normal act that everyone participated in. However, now that we have a better understanding of what smoking does to ones body and the people around them, there have been changes in beliefs toward this act. People do not view it as this harmful act anymore, it is viewed

The top floor was even emptier than a library. A narrow line of meeting rooms was not very popular amongst students. A pub on opposite side of the road had more luck than library’s fifth floor. ‘Maybe this is why coffee is better here.’ Amy thought. ‘Never used filters make a better coffee or something.’
