Social inequality occurs when particular social constructions are chosen to represent cultural and societal norms. Individuals who do not fit into these socially constructed categories are therefore seen as ‘other.’ Dillon (2015) stated that “Otherness, therefore, is not simply a benign way to acknowledge difference but a political and cultural representation that reifies and ultimately denigrates differences “ (p. 398). Dillon (2015) framed the issue of otherness as a result of political and historical representations of social categories. One of the main social categories that have influenced otherness is race. In North American history, political leaders have predominantly been white males who believed that the social categories that they belonged to were the only acceptable ones. …show more content…

To illustrate this, historical tensions between whites and blacks will be examined. Dillon (2015) explains that there is an issue called the color-line problem. It is stated that this is “the persistence of racism in the everyday lived experiences of non-whites as they go about finding a job, securing a promotion, getting a bank loan, hailing a cab, hanging out with friends on the street, [and] driving on the highway” (Dillon, 2015, p. 396). Social inequality has been constructed due to this racism, as in the past, these individuals have been seen as the ‘other.’ There are many phrases used today that indicate that social inequality due to racism still exists today, such as: “driving while black” and “shopping while black” (Dillon, 2015, p. 397).
