Diversity, like water it is good for you, but like all things it can be abused. Sometimes a “clouded” point of view causes the development of a prejudice. Prejudice and racism are coexisting. Racism and all types of prejudice affect us negatively, and that is a fact. Racism hurts, prejuce hurts, hate hurts. In today's society we develop stereotypes all of the time. Everything from how wealthy someone is based off of clothing, smart someone is based off of their testing scores. We know it is wrong but sometimes we can not help but to assume things.It is like a restriction on someone's abilities because we tell them that they can or can not do something because of how they dress or their skin color or their last name. Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.

The skinheads who were beating this man up had no reason to do so except for the fact that he was Mexican. Racism in this day and age is still as big of a problem as it was in the past, and as long as hate groups are still around to promote violence, society is never going to grow to love one another.
Stereotypes are a reality that we all must face in today's society. Regardless of what your ethnic background or culture may be. You have been probably been discriminated against, or treated differently, at some point in your life because of a stereotype that was long ago applied to your culture. For some, I perceive it may be worse than others. For example, all Hispanics are in this country illegally or all African Americans are criminals that cannot keep a job. We know these things are not true, but it doesn't keep some people from calling a Mexican a wetback or stop them from calling the police when they see a black man out walking at nigh,t now does it? So why do people think like this? The answer, in short, is stereotypes. In "The Myth of the Latin Woman," Judith Ortiz Cofer states that her personal goal in her public life is to "try to replace the old pervasive stereotypes and myths about Latinas with a much more interesting set of realities" (Cofer 812). By using the rhetoric appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos she causes us all to stop and think before we make assumptions based on stereotypes.
Stereotypes are the shackles of mankind. Personally, after racism, I really detest stereotypes; I just don’t understand why people in this world judge each other so much, it’s aggravating, irritating and infuriating. You can’t and shouldn’t judged someone over someone else’s actions; hence being the reason as to why God created everyone to be different and unique. For instance, one of the most common stereotypes that Indians are labelled with is that they love curry. “Oh I’m sorry” I didn’t know you get judged for liking a type of food. Individually, I love food and I also love curry but I am African, so does that make me an Indian? NO! Stereotypes can’t define a person and it shouldn’t define a race either. Why let someone else’s actions falsely define another person or why let someone’s skin colour define that person? For example: an albino is white but what if both of his parents are black, how would you define him, Black or White? Also, another thing that I hate, which I think a lot of teenagers can relate to, is when you’re walking down the street wearing a hoodie or a tracksuit and an older person in front of you sees you but chooses to cross over to the other side of the road because “you’re dangerous” or “a drug dealer” or maybe even “a serial killer” just for wearing that type of clothing. It’s actually truly pathetic classifying someone else by their choice of clothing as the last time I checked it was a free Country and you can wear as you please. I admit some of these stereotypes might be true but that doesn’t mean they relate to everyone. As, sometimes even I get quite terrified when I’m walking by myself and a see a gang of teenage boys in hoodies and tracksuits, but it’s because my brain is brain washed with all the negative things that’s said about them. Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Many will argue that in this day in age we are no longer at a race war but how can you be so sure when you actually open your eyes and see reality. Rapper Kanye West once said “racism is still alive, they just be concealing it” and these words are everything but false. You must ask yourself the real question about racism and it is how could you ever cure such a thing in people’s minds? People are free to think and believe what ever they would like and old habits such as racism will never change in people.
While browsing through articles on the internet, I came across many related to the topic of racism. I am beginning to feel as if I am surrounded by stories of racism. From the KKK’s aggressive campaign against immigrants, to the police violence against black people in cites throughout our nation, racism and discrimination continue to be problems. In the modern era, stereotypes seem to be the ways people justify and simplify the society. Actually, “[s]tereotypes are one way in which we ‘define’ the world in order to see it” (Heilbroner 373). People often prejudge people or objects with grouping them into the categories or styles they know, and then treat the types with their experiences or just follow what other people usually do, without truly understand what and why. Thus, all that caused miscommunication, argument or losing opportunities to broaden the life experience. Stereotypes are usually formed based on an individual’s appearance, race, and gender that would put labels on people.
Throughout the years, racial stereotypes have played a major role in society. Even today, one combines racial stereotypes and prejudice thoughts before one even says a word to the person. Just seeing an African- American man while in a parking lot and pulling out ones phone, can be a simple example of modern-day racial stereotypes.

Racism and prejudice has been present in almost every civilization and society throughout history. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
When someone hears the word prejudice, they assume it is speaking of hate against someone’s color. But prejudice means so much more than racial discrimination. It means white entitlement, classism, ableism, ageism, etc. The list goes on and on. There’s so much discrimination in this world and the majority of it comes from America. Americans say that everyone has the same chances and are equal but time and time again it is seen that this is not the case. Men, women, and children are all being subjected to hate and prejudice from entitled Americans. Even though Americans claim they are accepting of others, their actions show that America is still enslaved by prejudice.

It would be great to live in a world, without stereotyping everybody and everything you see. However nobody is going to stop stereotyping. The dictionary definition of a stereotype is “one that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.” Stereotyping or Labeling is a technique that “attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable.” These stereotypes become so cliché that they begin to form daily thoughts and views and one is unable to look beyond them. They then become dominant ideologies that are impossible to remove. These stereotypes are inevitable since they have been a key player in the propaganda that the west promotes to other cultures and societies.
