The most pressing social problem we’re facing in 2016 could, quite possibly, be that despite the vastly different social problems plaguing the United States, let alone the world today, the majority of people are uninformed or, even worse, apathetic about any of the issues that don’t directly affect them. On the other hand, there is also a rising vocal and often aggressive minority of people, mostly young adults and college students, who are committed to protesting and seeking resolutions for the social issues they find concerning for moral or personal reasons. One of these more contentious and divisive issues that has been becoming more and more urgent in the past few years, but seems to have reached a boiling point in 2016, is an epidemic
Both the Black Lives Matter movement, which accuses police officers of racially profiling and killing young black teens because of systematic racism within law enforcement, and the Blue Lives Matter movement, a conservative movement which operates in counter-opposition to Black Lives Matter and expresses pro-police sentiments, are guilty of manipulating social media to create online outrage. In essence, social media has inadvertently created a new brand of yellow journalism, which is particularly dangerous in the modern era where most people get their news from online headlines on their Facebook timeline rather than doing their own research by reading articles from different sources or
It requires taking an objective lens to a series of issues which are exceedingly subjective and endemic. I recognize my own ignorance in attempting to examine the underlying causes of a social problem as complex as cop killings, but I would argue that it’s an issue without concrete causes, which even then, can only be determined on a case-by-case basis. In fact, it’s dangerous to generalize or group these separate incidents under a singular, blanket cause such as racism. Hopefully, the number of killings by police or of police by civilians will continue to drop in the future, as forthcoming data seems to suggest that killings by cops are down from last year, and that reform placing cops under greater scrutiny continues to spread. For example, many police cruisers are now being equipped with dashboard cameras and cops are being required to wear body cameras, which hold them personally culpable for their actions and force them to act more aware and cautiously when they’re engaging a possible suspect. Over time, I’m sure we’ll see change. Social problems aren’t solved in a day, instead, they’re solved over a longer period of months or years as change occurs gradually across all affected areas of society.
