Historians face a large problem when studying history. Because history cannot be completely value free and objective, examining one source to gain the truth is not possible no matter how detailed it may be. They must call upon many different sources and analyse each one carefully trying to see past any bias and attempting to look at them with as much objectivity as possible. Breaking them up and analysing them intricately is the best way of coming as close as possible to truth of history. No matter how much historians analyse and decipher, there will inevitably be bias in one form or the other and it will not be 100% accurate to the truth.
To have 'value free' history is something that has been argued over since the start of historiography. Historians such as Cicero and Herodotus tried to distinguish between more and less reliable accounts to try and get a true unbiased account of history. It is hard to have value free history because any source we encounter was created in the past by a person; this person may have created the source with motives. These motives would not reflect the true representation of the events that unfolded. Historians are also biased when reading and deciphering sources. Their job is to discover and analyse history through evidential traces left behind by people. Establishing what happened, when and how. But elements of their personal viewpoint and bias towards what they are studying become apparent in their analysis of sources. When you study a source there is no way of telling if you are correct in your interpretation of the source as the creator has likely long since died. [3] But claiming that history is biased is not to imply that it is irrelevant and should stop being written. According to Walter Benjamin, history should stop masking itself as objective and homogeneous and instead focus on the monad: "where thinking suddenly stops in a configuration pregnant with tensions, it gives that configuration a shock" (262). Instead of charting the victor's path, history must examine how colonizer and colonized interact during a specific moment of time.
The Lewinsky Scandal… A perfect example as to why we cannot accept everything at face value before carefully examining it first. Everyone thought President Clinton was behaving himself in the White House, but, as it turns out, he was most definitely not. This can be the same for history. We must carefully consider different aspects of articles so that we do no make the mistake of believing everything we read. In order to fully understand an article, we must understand the author that wrote it. It is necessary to examine prejudices, sources, information left out, and missing background information before accepting an article. This method of critical analysis allows us to better understand the article and therefore history because we are more aware of the authors and their possible mishaps. “The View from the Bottom Rail”, an article in After the Fact, provides an opportunity to examine different aspects of analysis. If we look at it carefully, then we will be able to determine if the thesis was proven effectively.
The larger repercussions of this form of history, is that it misses out on the larger purpose of history. The most important part of history to be told truthfully is the bad part. Imagine our history glazing over Hitler as a crazy guy who acted alone, and forced everybody in Germany to go along with his plan. We need to hear the story that regular people were pulled into his mentality, that random Joe's were converted into Jew-hating murderers.
The education of an author on their topic is the biggest contributor to their reliability; having enough prior knowledge and background information on a subject is crucial when providing a historical analysis. An author’s personal background is of great importance as well, because their personal heritage and beliefs may lead to bias and misrepresentation of information, which removes all credibility of them and/or their work as source. Partiality, favoritism, and/or prejudice towards a specific demographic can create a blurred line between what is fact and what is opinion, which in turn can allow for personal assessments to be presented as arguments and facts even though they have been influenced to a great extent by prior thoughts and opinions.
When I was in High School, my history teacher once said to me, “history is written by the victors.” In other words, those who win, decide how they will be remembered. For instance, the history of the United States and their interactions with Native Americans. Old (bias) history textbooks will tell us you how the white European “discovered” America and saved the native “savage” from himself or herself. I found it very intriguing that I read three different books discussing history and how it functions. All of the authors had a different view on the most important functions of history. The beginning of “A Pocket Guide to Writing in History” asks a great question. Why should we bother studying the past in an increasingly future-oriented society? A Pocket Guide to Writing in History used a more open view and did not focus on the statistics as much of the other two authors. A Pocket Guide to Writing in History discusses the importance of seeing our world through different eyes. How a historian should ask questions and use a variety of critical thinking skills to have s better understanding of people, places, and events throughout history. A Pocket Guide to Writing in History emphasized that a
History is a story told over time. It is a way of recreating the past so it can be studied in the present and re-interpreted for future generations. Since humans are the sole beneficiaries of history, it is important for us to know what the purpose of history is and how historians include their own perspective concerning historical events. The purpose and perspective of history is vital in order for individuals to realise how it would be almost impossible for us to live out our lives effectively if we had no knowledge of the past. The truth is that history really is an important subject to be teaching students. History is more than just some lecture you receive in class, history lets us look back, see the good things and the bad things, it allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent such mistakes from happening in the future.
