There are a lot of normal people in the cities. But at its heart, there is a war going on. One that everyone knows, but no one mentions. This is the war between the Greasers, and the socies. The Greasers, on one hand, are the “Bad Boys”, the Outcasts, the bad stereotypes, exetera. They don't have fancy cars, if they even have cars, they are always getting into rumbles,and are going around town smoking. They are shunned from society. They are usually born into their life. In the book The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy, along with his brothers and friends, has to face the daily struggles of being a greaser among the Socs. This fiction book focused on Ponyboy’s life and the problems he ran into with the Socs. He and his gang of friends had fights with the Socs that happened often, and had to deal with a Soc being killed by one of the Greasers, though it was an act of self defense. The three topics addressed in this intriguing novel are the fight between rich and poor, the power of friendship, and what it means to be a hero.
The book The Outsiders is the realistic story about this between two very different groups in a town in the United States: the poor Greasers from the east side, and the Socs, whitch is what the greasers call the socials, the richer boys from the other side of the town. Ponyboy Curtis is the narrator of the story, a 14-year-old boy who lives with his two older brothers, Darry and Soda. He is a pretty good athlete and student, but is not treated the same as the richer students at his school. Ponyboy uses to have long hair that he greases back, a symbol of being in the outsider gang. He is unhappy with his situation, because Darry is too protective of him and he always has to be afraid of Socs attacking him.

The society had negative thoughts towards Greasers, because there were not many things people expected from the Greasers other than doing bad things such as stealing, having rumble, and other bad things that happened around the society. Not every Greaser does bad things, however, the Greasers took the blame for anything bad even if it was the Socs fault. The movie, The Outsiders, starts with the Curtis parents on their weekly, Saturday evening drive to the baking store to buy some ingredients for their boys’ favorite Sunday morning, breakfast treat: chocolate cake. The Curtis boys love their chocolate cake for Sunday breakfast not only because they love it, but also because they appreciate how hard their parents have to work to save the monies necessary for the morsels that put smiles on their faces!

I feel as though the novel The outsiders has many themes, but the most important one is belonging. The greasers are a group of poor, low class youth that don’t have much and live on the wrong side of town. They are always held accountable for their actions. On the other hand, the Socs are a bunch of high class youth that are very privileged and aren’t held accountable for their immature actions.
Throughout life individuals face many challenges testing their values and personality one situation at a time. In the evocative novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton themes of growing up and innocence are shown. Ponyboy is not your average 14 year old he is part of a gang known to many as the Greasers. He encounters many situations testing his values and beliefs. Having lost both his parents recently he and his brothers stick together like a true family but this relationship is tested when Darry hits Ponyboy. He also experiences the loss several close friends in a very short period of time. Throughout this novel, Ponyboy encounters many life changing experiences that prove he is a dynamic character.
But they spend almost the entire story neck and neck. They spend all of their time focusing on what is going on in their own lives. For the greasers those things are, living with little money, not having family members to rely on, and having to deal with the Socs. For the Socs, it's wanting their family to discipline them more to show them they care, keeping up their reputation, and having to deal with the neglect of their parents. Both sides have so many thing going on in their lives that they don't even think about the reason they are fighting or what's so wrong about the other side. The theme to me is There is no line that separates us. In the story The Outsiders the two main groups who are figuratively and literally on the opposite sides of town, the East side and the West side where the prime meridian of the city separates the Greasers and the Socs. When Pony and Johnny are at the movies and stop Dallas Winston from annoying the two Soc girls in front of them, the girls start to talk them and the boys realize that Socs aren’t very different from Greasers, besides the slicked back hair and the fancy blue Mustangs. Social divide hinders their ability to forgive one another and reunite as a whole, but instead motivates them to persist with a restricting mindset. Everytime the classes act mercilessly to one another, enmity between the two grows and the more the hatred, the worse the situation gets. All this tension piles up and is released through heinous acts like the one in the quote above. As a result, their viewpoint towards one another become more and more flawed because they judge one person’s behavior for only their bad side and regarded this nature to the rest of the class. Even though the Socs and greasers share some common ground with each other, their similarities are forgotten and overwhelmed by the detestation they have for each other. S. E. Hinton uses this scene to point out that people can often make the wrong call because of the seething hate we might have for someone. The Socs were considered the wealthy, sophisticated kids, while the Greasers weren’t liked so much by society. They were poverty-stricken and lived in poorly maintained neighborhoods. “Most greasers don’t have real tuff builds or anything. This is partly because they don’t eat much and partly because they’re slouchy”(Hinton 140). The two associations fought each other time and time again with an intimidating appearance. They may have on a hard face on the outside, but on the inside, they are people with emotions and are devoted to keeping their brotherhood safe.

Pony and Soda are allowed to stay under Darry's guardianship as long as they all behave themselves. The boys are greasers, a class term that refers to the young men on the East Side, the poor side of town. The greasers' rivals are the Socs, short for Socials, who are the "West-side rich kids."
