Imagine being a child during war where your lose your family and are forced to leave the country. In the novel, The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi, a young girl faces many challenges. She changes from a shy girl to a confident young woman. She loses her leg in a mine explosion, she then flees to America, and then she has to adjust to American life. Through these painful obstacles, Farah learns to not be afraid of starting over. The first challenge Farah faces is losing her leg in a mine explosion. Farah in a rush to get to school, takes a shortcut. While doing so, she steps on a field mine and has to get her leg amputated. “They let me build up my hopes and then everything broke apart for me. I felt like half a person now, alone with my emotions and confusions.”(p.61) This piece of evidence shows how Farah feels when she find out that they amputated her leg. She feels lost and disturbed. She is afraid of how her life is going to change. When Farah realizes the doctors in Germany amputated her leg, she feels confused and terribly upset. Farah loses her fathers and sisters to a rocket. Her brothers escape and she and her mother also flee to Pakistan and become refugees. An opportunity arises and they fly to America. “We would fly from Quetta to Islamabad the very next week, and from there we would go to America. It happened so suddenly! It felt like a miracle!”(p.165) The evidence shows that Farah felt blessed when she got to go to America, because she got to escape all her nightmares. She got to start over fresh. In Pakistan, many bad things happened to Farah. Thus when she got to go to America she felt it was a gift from God. She feels this way since she gets to leave everything bad
