Description: Noble Alexander De Las Casas is pacing impatiently outside his bedroom. You can hear his wife’s screams from the inside. All of the sudden the his wife stops screaming and you can hear a baby’s cry. The doctor is walking out of the room with a grim expression on his face.

Doctor: I have good news and bad news milord. Which one would you like to hear first.
Noble: [Has a slightly nervous expression]The bad news?
Doctor: Your wife has died
Noble: [Looks completely relieved and shrugs] Oh that’s it?
Doctor: [Completely shocked] What do you mean “that’s it”? Don’t you care about your wife?
Noble: [Has a bored look on his face] No, the only purpose of that wench’s life was to give me a son. Speaking of that let me see him.

All the Pretty Horses involves many interesting characters in its story. Most of the characters are believable in this story. Many are flat and static with a few being round and dynamic. The characters are complex, with their own histories and personalities driving their actions. There are many minor characters in the story that do not really have any purpose than helping to move the plot along. There aren’t many characters with considerable roles. The protagonist is John Grady Cole and the antagonists are the captain, Jimmy Blevins, and Alejandra’s aunt. The main character is John Grady Cole, a round and dynamic character. The definition of compassion: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. As this definition shows compassion shows concern for other that every person would love to have. In The Chosen written by Chaim Potok, Mr. Potok really presents compassion in his book. Not only does he display compassion in one of his character but in every single one he gives them compassion that is expressed in different ways. He goes into detail example of compassion with each of his characters and really emphasizes the true meaning of compassion. Three main character that he shows compassion through in different ways are, Reuven, Mr. Malter and Reb Sanders.

Should a doctor tell the truth directly to the patient regardless of the family’s wishes not to do that? Or in contrast, should the doctor simply tell the truth to the patient prior to his or her family? Ruiping Fan and Benfu Li’s journal article primarily focuses on whether or not a physician should tell truth to the patient. From a personal opinion, patients have the right to know their state of health. To be honest with a patient, despite his or her family's wishes, before telling the family ultimately depends on many things, such as the patient's age, medical conditions and circumstances, and religious beliefs.

After a head to toe assessments, touching and prodding, the physician writes up a prescription and explains in a medical jargon the treatment plan. As the short consultation comes to a close, it’s wrapped up with the routine “Please schedule an appointment if there are no signs of improvement”. In order to understand how the medical gaze has stemmed into patient care, I begin with observations of a Grand Round, lectures for the progress of continuing medical education of physicians. There are expectations of physicians to be informed of cutting edge medical procedures and biotechnology since it can result in a less aggressive and more efficient treatment plan of patients. As I witness the resident physician’s maturation of medical competence in during a Surgical Grand Round at UC Irvine Medical Center, it has shifted the paradigm of the medical gaze and explains how competence is a form of compassion and empathy in patient care.

Doctors have the enormous privilege of touching and changing lives. They have tremendous qualities and characteristics. Doctors must combine conflicting and incomplete information to reach a diagnosis while dealing with uncertainty and protocols that can be very challenging. A doctor must be able to absorb people's pain and anxieties without losing focus, treating patients as a human being rather than a symptom or collection of symptoms. They must be able to takes time to listen and communicate honestly and effectively with patients. To remain calm and proficient when under pressure and still make clear and timely decisions is a must. “A leader who is confident about their standards and holds values and beliefs is essential in every physician.” (Sir Ruben)
Doctors can only do so much; in order to be healthy one has to work along with their doctor by keeping up with preventative methods to help one’s health opposed to taking several pills per day for heart disease while continuously eating poorly. However, this partnership between patient and doctor must be met with tedious planning taking the patient’s whole lifestyle into prospective, from their religious to personal beliefs. Pride must be set aside by both partners, as they make negotiable compromises before consigning on this health plan.
