Homeopathy is natural form of medicine that has been around for over two hundred years. Homeopathy works by treating a symptom with the “principle of similars”.“We should imitate nature...a drug with power to provoke another, artificial disease, as similar as possible, and the former disease will be cured: fight like with like.” (Hahnerman) Homeopathy works by treating a symptom with the “principle of similars”. This means to give a substance that will elicit a healing response. Over the past couple of years, it has been discovered that conventional medicine has serious side effects which can harm a person’s health. There are many different uses of alternative medicine and that can be used in a variety of situations. Some people may be skeptical of alternative medicine since they are not aware of the facts and statistics. By homeopathy becoming more popular people will not be as skeptical. “Despite the successes of many alternative therapies, the phrase "alternative medicine" has not acquired a completely respectable air. To many, especially doctors trained in conventional medicine, "alternative therapies" seem unscientific and dangerous” (Badertscher). As the author shows that although alternative medicine may seem skeptical to people, there are many reasons to prove that alternative medicine is an overall better solution. For example, a person may suffer from chronic back pain may decide to go to a chiropractor instead of using medication such as oxycodone. “Homeopathy was always regarded, therefore, as the rich man’s therapy’, and the exclusive preserve of the wealthy, privileged and titled” (Francoeur). This was shown as the rich man 's therapy because at the time only wealthy people could afford it. Due to this perception many people were financially unable to pay for homeopathy. This stopped many people from using this treatment since they thought it was only for the upper class, although it was found to be much cheaper than conventional medicine. “British homeopathy could never really shake off its aristocratic gloss, and thus it never established itself at a popular level among lower classes, which was marked contrast to the other sects” (Francoeur). In the United States, homeopathy was easily accepted and more financially available. Constantine Hering played a major role in the use of homeopathy in the United States. Constantine Hering is referred to as the father of American Homeopathy. He founded the Hahnermann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1800. Homeopathy became popular in the United States during the late 1800’s. The increase in homeopathic medicine was due to a rapid spread of deadly diseases. Although Hahnermann had shown the true effect of homeopathy, he received criticism since homeopathy had a negative financial impact on pharmacies and doctors.
