Homeopathy medicine is a self-healing alternative medicine developed in 1790 by German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann. Constantine Hering who introduced homeopathy medicine into the United States in 1835. Homeopathy practice was widely popular in Europe and America. By 1900, there were “22 homeopathic medical schools, 100 homeopathic hospitals and over 1000 homeopathy pharmacies in the united states” (Synovitz & Larson, pg. 128). Homeopathy was very popular in the 1900s until its decline during and after the civil war. Due to the rise of technology advancement and pharmaceutical companies promoting drugs and surgeries, the popularity of homeopathy began to decline. People were more inclined to use allopathic medicine due to its more pronounce effectiveness. The major event that led to the decline of homeopathy was the American Medical Association (AMA). Due to the decline of homeopathy doctors to join the AMA, the AMA started persecuting the homeopaths physician beginning in 1914. The AMA proposed “uniform standards of medical education and assumed the power of accreditation” (Homeopathy, Slide 17). Due to this action, the AMA would not accredit homeopathy education, and eventually it was nonexistent. However, Homeopathy medicine has been making a comeback since 1980s. Throughout time, mankind has persistently been seeking ways to maintain their health and to cure those that had not been so fortunate in that task. Just about everything has been experimented with as a cure for some type of illness whether physical, spiritual or mental. There has always been evidence of spiritual healing and it will continue to be an important part of any healing process, large or small. In particular, the roots of Native American Medicine men (often a woman in some cultures) may be traced back to ancient times referred to as Shaman. A special type of healer used by the Indians is referred to as a medicine man (comes from the French word medecin, meaning doctor).

This was shown as the rich man 's therapy because at the time only wealthy people could afford it. Due to this perception many people were financially unable to pay for homeopathy. Constantine Hering is referred to as the father of American Homeopathy. He founded the Hahnermann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1800. Homeopathy became popular in the United States during the late 1800’s. The increase in homeopathic medicine was due to a rapid spread of deadly diseases. Although Hahnermann had shown the true effect of homeopathy, he received criticism since homeopathy had a negative financial impact on pharmacies and doctors. For many centuries, humanity has been on an eternal quest for cures and treatments for many chronic conditions. At the present time, conventional medicine is mostly performed by doctors and other health care professionals, with the extensive use of pharmaceutical drugs, surgery or radiation treatments for disease treatment. Conversely, even though not as popular, complementary and alternative medicine and treatment options are slowly gaining popularity and becoming an addition to traditional medicine.
Ross defines and differentiates between the terms healing and curing. She recognizes the fact that healing and curing are very intertwined and it can be hard to distinguish between the two terms. There are differences between the definitions in scholarly and general settings. She references an ethnographic study of healing versus curing conducted by anthropologists Andrew Strathern and Pamela Stewart in 1999 with native groups in New Guinea. The results of the study looked at how energy used by the different types of tribal healers to either cure or heal a patient. Eastern medicine focuses on how energy interacts with the healing process in connection within the mind. Whereas Western medicine is focused on the mind and the body separately. The practice is considered a holistic approach to finding cures. According to Ross (2013), healing is more a therapeutic process targeting the whole body and specific illness including emotional, mental, and social aspects in the treatment. The act of curing is a pragmatic approach that focuses on removing the problem all together. The life experiences of a person playing into how well certain treatments will heal or cure what is ailing them. These aspects can not be defined with textbook definitions. The interaction that the healing process has with energy is a variable in the success rate. Uncontrolled emotions can have a greater impact on the inside the body than a person can realize. When non-mainstream medicine is used in place of conventional medicine it is known as alternative. When non-mainstream medicine is used with conventional medicine it is known as complementary. The majority of the population gets sick or gets some medical condition and will head straight to the doctor for a prescription; prescriptions that will have a long list of side effects that sometimes seem worse than the original problem. They will buy pricey visits with specialists, when after visiting ten doctors the problem just keeps coming back, if it even ever went away at all. There has to be a simpler way. Something that doesn't come with a large price tag and doesn't have side effects; it fixes the illness and doesn't just mask the symptoms. Alternative medicine is becoming more and more popular because it attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. With many conditions there are simple, natural, and effective cures that could be considered next time as an alternative to traditional medicine or used with traditional medicine to reach optimal health.
