Fat. Tall. Gay. Or just different. These are just some of the reasons children are being bullied in school and on social media. The American Psychological Association defines bulling as “ a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. The bullied individual typically has trouble defending him or herself and does nothing to cause the bullying” (American Psychological Association, 2016). A majority of children experience some form of bullying, kids bullying others, being bullied, or witnessing someone being bullied. Bullying was once limited to taking place at school, but now can be experience also on social media (Twitter and Facebook). With the wide range of arenas that bullying can now take place, it has become problematic, and can cause irrevocable damage to a child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. Children are now being bullied more between the ages of 9 – 18 years old in the schools. In the “ 2012–2013 School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that, nationwide, about 22% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying” and in “2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) indicated that, nationwide, 20% of students in grades 9–12 experienced bullying”. Due to the continuing changes in technology, parents are recommended to monitor their children interaction with family and friends. In addition, to becoming more engaged in their child’s schooling and social media activities, to better understand the ever changing role / types of bullying. The importance of bullying has launched the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to put together a panel of experts to discuss and look at the latest research. “The panel looked at the latest research that examined youth involvement in bullying as a victim, perpetrator, or both and found them to be highly associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The panel also examined the association of youth involved in bullying who experience suicide-related behaviors and other risk factors for suicide, such as depression, delinquency, physical and sexual abuse, and exposure to violence”
