A Modest Proposal For Ending Bullying and Harassment of Students by Fellow Students Bullying is a prevalent issue in school communities across the world which has caused great damages to the bullied. In fact, suicides is one of the leading cause of deaths in students 10 to 14 years old and the cause of suicide was overwhelmingly from bullying. Bullying is pervasive amongst all age groups; statistics show there is an estimated 1 in 7 students grades K-12 who are being bullied. Social media is increasingly becoming the new medium for bullying where anonymity allow bullies to be as toxic as pleases them. So what good solutions has our schools came up for this? Issues with the bully’s behaviors are near impossible to correct, but I feel there is one area where the school institute change. Grades, good or bad, is a source of tension in any student’s lives. Students with good grades stress to maintain it and student with bad grades either work harder or feel too demotivated and start to veer off course. Here is where my solution will help. If my hypothesis is correct, students in the Work-Hard group are students who already have great morals, who understands the wrongs of bullying and as such knows better than to use their powers to bully. What I mean when I say bullying should be facilitated is not that it should be advocated, but it should be kept as a possibility, as a goal to work towards. I have taken into account that there will be students who will abuse their authority to harass the Work-Harder students. They are an important part of my plan. They show the Work-Harder students that if they improve their grades, they will earn those rights and privileges. To make their difference even clearer, I further recommend that the two student groups have vastly different learning environments. Work-Hard students should enjoy their learning in the best environment the school has to offer while the Work-Harder students will work in the worst environment, which serves as motivation for them to raise their grades to study in
