Can children who have been abused function as adults? Some children may still require counseling as adults, if abuse is repeated, if the child develops PTSD, and if the child is still replaying the same memory of the abuse in their brain. Other children can get through life with help and support.
According to Susanne Babbel in, “The Lingering Trauma in Child Abuse”, she states that “child abuse can cause psychological ramifications for many years”. This means that a child who has been abused can continue to have problems for so many years, even as adults.

“For children that have suffered from abuse, it can be complex getting to the root of childhood trauma to alleviate later symptoms as adults”. However, Susanne also states that younger girls who have been abused are more likely to experience PTSD as adults.
“Once a child has grown to be an adult, however, symptoms of PTSD can become subtler as he or she learns how to cope with this in day-to-day life”. Abused children who become adults with PTSD, may develop problems with depression, anxiety, alcohol, drugs, sleep, and eating disorders. Children who have been victims of abused and later as adults develop PTSD, can also have issues with society. As stated in Susanne’s article “Many have problems in their relationships and trusting another person again. Many even end up in abusive relationships and find themselves re-enacting the past”.
In the article “Wounds That Time Won’t Heal”, by Martine Teicher, he states “We see specific kinds of brain abnormalities in psychiatric patients who were abused as children”. This means that abused children may grow up with issues they did not have as a child, but may developed as they
