The book “The Leadership Pipeline How to Build the Leadership Powered Company”, discusses the need to establish clearly defined passages from the individual contributor to the Enterprise Manager. In the first section of the book we review the characteristics needed to succeed as a Group Manager. These characteristics are all built on efficacious passage from the previous level of manager. If an individual was not fully proficient and had not made the transition from one level to the next he or she will clog the leadership pipeline and will prevent effective management, both above the clog and below the clog.

At this level in the pipeline the leader must hold a high level of maturity as a leader. This maturity can be characterized by the leader’s ability to have empathy, good judgment and should develop strong listening skills with the ability to interpret all the information they receive (Ram Charan). Additionally, these leaders must be able to see things in the long run as well as appreciate the short term objectives. Moreover, the level of maturity needed at this management level requires the individual to think, not like a functional member of the organization, but as a businessman (Ram Charan). This level in the leadership pipeline has been described as the most enjoyable because of the level of ownership it affords (Ram Charan). The Business Manager is responsible for virtually all aspects of the operation to include the management of costs and revenues (Ram Charan). Additionally, at this level of the pipeline the leader must think differently. Instead of asking questions such as, can the orders go out on time and are we adequately compensating or workers?
