In the story, The Lady with the Dog, Chekhov uses the characters to demonstrate how humans deal with the emotional complexities of love, dissatisfaction, and freedom. To demonstrate the complexities of emotions, the author uses the complicated affair of Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna. In The Lady with the Dog the emotional complexities of the characters prove that emotions can be painful and difficult like a battle.
In the story, Gurov’s affair with Anna demonstrates the emotional complexity on love. This affair proves how falling in love is uncontrollable can be painful. The complication of dissatisfaction in this story shows how no matter what a person has, he or she will always want more or better. An example of this is shown using Gurov’s life. He’s married, has children, and he seems like he has a good paying job because he can travel to and fro without any hassle, but he is not happy. He disliked his wife and he was sick of everything, “He was sick of his children sick of the bank; he had no desire to go anywhere or to talk of anything” (Chekov 297). This demonstrates that something is missing in his life and that he will not be satisfied until his emotions are. An example of this is when the affair first started between Anna and Gurov it was in a place that was unfamiliar to both of them so they were more comfortable and relaxed together. This shows how being away from others can be a good thing because it can help bring out the emotions that one is feeling. In this story when Gurov and Anna are in Yalta they are more open with each other. They hold hand and kiss without feeling as of someone is watching them. On the other hand, when Gurov goes to where Anna lives and meets up with her, they both feel uncomfortable because they were around people who knew Anna therefore they were not able to express their emotions. The same thing happened when Anna came to visit Gurov because he had people who knew and worked with him there so they were not able to be as free with each other and their emotions like they were when they were in Yalta. The freedom that was represented in this story shows how when a person feels as if he or she has the freedom to do what he or she wants, or be with whoever that person wants to be with, without restraints or worries, then that person will be more open with his or her emotions, but when that person does not feel to be free, then that person will be more hesitant with sharing his or her emotions, which can cause their relationship to be more
