If Joshua Chamberlain’s speech had not been created or worded quite the same way, is it possible the war may have been lost? Chamberlain expressed true emotion throughout his speech and in the end persuaded over 100 men to continue fighting for the Union in the Civil War. He used his words to convince these men, the mutineers, to fight rather than shooting those who didn’t wish to. He was honest while speaking, told them the true reason they were fighting, and inspired them to fight for what they believed was right. His speech is reenacted in the movie Gettysburg and written in the book The Killer Angels. Although both mediums have their differences they both get across the point that Chamberlain’s speech was an inspiration to the mutineers and an immense influence on the Civil War’s outcome.

An advantage of using text is that it tends to be more detailed than in movies. Additionally, books have more scenes and movies may cut things out that the creators find unimportant. Even though books have their pros, they have their disadvantages as well. For one thing, the text occasionally fails to capture the expressions of it’s characters, whereas a movie involves acting to portray their emotion. Another disadvantage of using this medium is in the movie you can hear the tone of how each character is speaking, while in the text the tone can’t be as easily deciphered. There are many advantages to watching a film rather than reading the story. One of these is that a movie tends to be easier to relate to, probably because of the better portrayed emotion. A con to viewing films rather than reading stories is that characters are often not how the reader imagined them to be look-wise.
