The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report point out the future of nursing. The report recommends that Nurses play an important role and responsibility in leading advance health care. Through the Transforming Practice, Transforming Education, and Transforming Leadership to meet the needs of high-quality nursing care. As a nurse should achieve advance practice through education and training, to meet the goals of the IOM report required the nursing practice as a leader in the future.

The standards issued herein may be utilized as the indication of the standard of care, with the knowledge that the application of the rules is context dependent. The standards are determined to change with the dynamics of the nursing profession as new models of professional practice are developed and affirmed by the nursing education and the society. In addition, specific requirements and clinical circumstances may also affect the application of the criteria at a given time; e.g., during an emergency and natural disaster or in the war. The standards are directed to formal, periodic review and revision.

Standards are important aspects of nursing that a nurse must learn and implement every day for the rest of their nursing career. These standards provide for a nurse’s competence in the quality of care they deliver to the public. Standards offer a necessary guidance to nurses everywhere in an effort to ensure that people are treated correctly and ethically. Patients expect nurses to have a general knowledge of the medical realm and to know exactly what it is they –as nurses- are responsible for. Nurses need to have a sense of professionalism that enable the patient to feel safe and secure, knowing that a competent person is caring for him. A lack of professionalism does the opposite, making it impossible for a patient to trust or respect the nurse caring for him. Standards of nursing, if utilized correctly, give the nurse that sense of professionalism the patient is expecting. It insures for the safety of the patient and allows the nurse to provide quality health care that is expected of a medical professional.
The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.
The government responded to the recommendations of the Francis Inquiry and voiced the recommendations for improving patient involvement in care, including changes to regulations and inspections (DOH, 2014). The NMC also responded to the Francis Inquiry in relation to the role of the nurse which was evaluated and criticised for ways in which it could be improved within the clinical setting, in order to improve nursing practice and knowledge towards patient-centred care. The NMC whole-heartedly agreed that there should be an increased focus in nurse training, education and professional development, in practical aspects in addition to theory (NMC, 2013).

Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
