Each person carries things with them, whether it’s a purse, or a backpack, or a slim wallet slid into their pocket. They may not carry these physical things all of the time, but these staple items are with more than they’re not. The become a part of the person’s identity. They become emotional burdens for the person to bear.
I carry a backpack. It must weigh at least 25 pounds, and there are so many reasons for it to weigh so much. First and foremost, it holds my textbooks. Most students use their lockers to store their textbooks, but I keep mine with me, as if parting with them would tear me apart. And maybe it would.
I also carry a planner with me, whether I really want to or not. Inside the planner lives my life, my daily plans, my to do lists, and even my own personal due dates. It fuels my need to be doing something every minute of every day. There is always something that I could do, should do. And, maybe I’ll do it later. Because doing something doesn’t mean finishing homework or that essay that really should’ve been written last week. Unplugging is not something I actively seek out. Growing up in the digital age has forced me to place some dependence on technology in my daily life. If I 'm writing an essay for school, it almost always has to be typed. Research for any class is conducted primarily online. Trying to gather friends together for any event requires multiple apps and group chats. Even personal activities have been transferred to more digital alternatives. Books can now be read from a phone and writing books has become less of a hand written process and more of a typing process. Now writing is 5% talent, 95% not getting distracted by the internet, which is where most people spend whatever shreds of free time they
