What is Motivation in the workspace? According to the business dictionary motivation is “The internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal (Dictionary, 2016).” Motivation in the work place can be achieved by means of a variety of different strategies all depending on the environment and the specific challenges an organization may be facing. Motivation is a great tool when it comes to improving performance, setting goals and redesigning the job or workspace are both strategies used to motivate employees and to improve overall production. According to the business dictionary, “Job enrichment adds new sources of job satisfaction by increasing the level of responsibility of the employee (Dictionary, 2016).” Enrichment in the workplace could be needed if behaviors such as low morale, boredom, or delays in decisions start to affect the productivity of the organization. As a leader in this situation, it is important to take note of the “Step-by-step” approach as outlined in Job Redesign or Expanded HIM Function by Layman, cleverly named from the mnemonic it spells out “DESIGN”, as they are guides for successfully enriching the work environment for employees rather than possibly adding to stress, which could have an inverse effect. These steps help apply enrichment by first understanding the problem areas in the office in order to better find a solution, and get supervisors and management teams on board with the same level of understanding. Next, as plans are implemented Layman emphasizes the importance of continued monitoring and reflection so as to keep up enrichment and stay away from added stress.
