In my opinion the most unique thing about science is that it always evolves and is always changing even if we don’t particularly notice. With the ever so changing science world comes something called citizen science which is the public involvement in inquiry and discovery of new scientific knowledge. A citizen science project can involve one person or millions of people collaborating towards a common goal. Typically, public involvement is in data collection, analysis, or reporting. (“What Is Citizen Science?” SciStarter) The project I decided to focus on was the air quality egg, which simply deals with the analyzation of air within your environment. Many people fail to realize the significance of citizen science, we as a society tend to ignore …show more content…
The air quality egg is a way to monitor pollutant levels within the environment around you. You are also able to compare data with others and search the data of other eggs worldwide. (“Air Quality Egg and the Makers.” Citizen Sense) These carry concern in that without clean air for us, life is essentially impossible. We as a society should always be aware of the air we breathe, and ultimately what is being released into it. Aside from just humans just about every organism we know depends on clean air and would cease to exist without it, so clean air isn’t just critical for us but ultimately the majority of the earth depends on it. From an early age, I’ve always found air quality interesting, in my case mainly because I live in an area that is substantial on logging. As someone who already adores science I had no other choice but to pay attention to the air, with many trees being cut down and various industrial plants around, I felt I had to remain environmentally aware. I’ve always wanted to find ways to innovate our factories and plants so that the air isn’t injured in the way it is repeatedly from these things. Although it may seem minor you would think others would care about something that is essential to living
Scientific research is constantly being battled in politics. The point of communication in science is to try and get across a proven theory to the public. Under the scrutiny of political agendas, these efforts face many hurdles. Informing the public of climate changes has had a positive impact on the acceptance of science. There are several techniques the scientific community communicates their findings to the public.
For my local area, there are no environmental concerns; however, I learned of the detailed information available regarding air quality monitoring – which indicated that the air quality for our location is among the best air quality in the nation. (The state of California leads the nation in several aspects of environmental stewardship.)
Pollutants are contaminants that enter and affect the natural environment which can cause negative changes. There are two main types of pollution, air and water, which occur from different sources and have different effects. Air pollution is the main cause of “dirty air” in the United States. Suburban areas suffer from outdoor air pollutants as well as indoor air pollutants. Indoor air pollutants are caused by the burning of coal and wood, which are used for heating. Outdoor air pollutants are caused by chimneys, in which smoke is released into the air, and crop fertilizers, which are generally used in rural areas. The impact air pollution has on humans are large cases of health defects in rural areas: such as cancer, tuberculosis, heart diseases, and low birth weights. J.P Majra, author of “Air Quality In Rural Areas” states that, “This leads various health problems, mainly affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular system...” (Majra, 2). This shows that if the United States alone uses this much fertilizer, in which affects our health, imagine how much the world will be affected. Kirk Smith, professor of environmental health sciences at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health states that ”nearly 10% of all lost-life years worldwide” has been due to air pollution (COEH
From kindergarten to senior year of high school I remember little about conducting scientific investigations in biology. My most prevalent memory of experimentation and investigation throughout my early academic careers is the science fair. Each year I would choose an “interesting” school board approved topic like plant growth, heat transfer, or climate to conduct an experiment. None of the experiment stands out because it was
Do you every question why global warming is a thing? Do you ever stop to pick up trash on the side of the road? Have you actually ever thought of what you could do to make the world a better place? There are many things in the world that we humans can do to benefit our own ecosystem. From 1993 to 2017, through engagement and hands-on education, the television show Bill Nye, the Science Guy demonstrates the foundations of Science.
The earth is billions of years old, and humans only realized the power of fossil fuels in the last century. Knowing what we are doing to the environment should be enough for people to take a stand and reduce their carbon emissions. It’s not just a matter of awareness, it’s about letting people know why they should care on a personal level and on a larger scale. Climate change is real, and most of it is because of human activity.
Corburn argues that street science does not devalue science but revalues other information and democratizes the inquiry and decision making process.
By placing awareness on a bigger platform, more people will become informed and want to take action to help save our great apes and, in turn, our
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
Relevance: Air pollution is something that everyone should be concern, especially if we’re advancing a lot in technology, especially in vehicles and the importance of our air or the environment.
In conclusion, air pollution affects the immune system, making it weak and vulnerable to certain bacteria, illnesses, viruses and foreign invaders. Common diseases that are affected the most include asthma and allergies. Air pollution in general has been seen to modify the immune system's handling of particular allergens. The exposure to toxins like dioxin can cause serious health problems for people. Having long-term exposure to this toxin is connected to weakening of the immune system, as well as the nervous system, endocrine system and certain reproductive functions. Hence, everyone has a particular level and exposure of dioxins in the body. Improving air quality is the key answer to avoiding any type of development of disease, but it is a long term goal that will require the help and commitment at the national and global level.
by climate deniers. Though the response to Climate Change has been slow, there is still time to act. Whether people volunteer to plant trees as part of a group or purchase a low carbon vehicle, everyone can do their
No living species can live without the air. Ordinarily, polluted air brings different types of diseases or health-related problems to the human beings. Every human being should be aware that they are not taking any actions which help to pollute the air. If we know we are polluting the air then we have to think about reducing the air pollution. Either we set up any industry or we do housework, whether we are using vehicles or working in the farms for agriculture, we all have to be conscious about the air pollution. We all share the same environment so we all have to think about making the environment
Every other day a new industries are being set up, new vehicles on roads and trees are being cut to make way for new homes. All of them, indirect way lead to increase in CO2 leads to melting of polar ice caps which increase the sea level and pose danger for the people living near coastal areas. Pollution can have an impact in our health not only affects people with impaired respiratory system such as asthmatics, but very healthy adults and children too. Exposure to pollution for 6 to 7 hours, even at relatively low concentrations, reduces lung function and induces respiratory inflammation and, healthy people during periods of moderate
Many people assume that the environment is not in danger. They believe that as technology advances, we do not need to worry about renewing natural resources, recycling, and finding new ways to produce energy. They state that one person in the world does not make a large difference. In reality, each individual's contribution greatly affects our environment. Our natural resources are slowly disappearing, and we must work together to save them and the Earth from ruin.
